HeY guys, I'm outside again trying to fire this jai ling 5.5 clone up .

Here is a pic how it sits, i was wondering how crutial that hose that goes from what i think is the vakve cover to the carb? I can't seem to find one around my junkyard (backyard) and was wondering if it is absolutely needed to run or even start this motor.

If it is a must would anybody happen to know what size I should pick up today?

Here are a couple pics

Not crucial at all. Just re-directs crankcase gasses into carb to be burned off.
Teaspoon of gas in plug hole to see if fires up for a short burst.
No it did not fire up with gas in the plug hole. It does have spark, I held it and pulled and got a zap.

Any other ideas as to why it won't fire up?

did you do a spark plug test ? If its blue or white it should be fine. You might just get a new spark plug to rule it out. You can do a compression test if its 100+ your probably good if you dont have a compression tester pull the plug turn the ignition off put your finger over the plug and give it a good pull if no matter how hard you push the compression still pushes your finger off your probably good. If compression and spark are good then put a little gas on the air filter (dont soak it because if it backfires...) the air filter will work as a crude carburator and should let the engine run for a bit. I would suggest safety glasses and ear muffs because without a muffler it'll pop like a gun and always a good idea to have a fire extinguisher around. good luck

it is a new spark plug, i will try to put my finger over the hole shortly to see if it even haves enough compression to push my finger off.

i dont actually have an air filter for it, it didnt come with one and figured i could at least see if it ran before i bothered spending $9-$11 for an air filter.

I am thinking about buying a predator and using this one for parts, i read somewhere that you can put a 5.5 head cover on a 6.5 clone and get better compression, is that true? is it safe?

oh i didnt know that, and i dont have an exhaust for the motor, it didnt have one when i bought it. im gonna see if i have something that may fit even partially just for some back pressure to see if maybe it does help. also do most people use that hose that i have missing or do the leave it off? , or does it make a mess if its missing?

Being a clone, Your gx muffler may fit

If you leave it open, it will get messy as oil can escape through the hole. Either refit the hose or blank off the hole in the valve cover & the carb

:( i dont actually have a gx muffler anymore. would a gcv160 muffler work on it ???

now that you mention plugging the holes on the motor from the valve cover and carb, would not having those plugged possibly keep the motor from starting??? hoping that when i plug them and try to get an exhuast on there it will magically fire up and run like a dream :D

ooh oh oh i forgot, the black plastic screw on the carb, what is the default setting on that, also there is another flat head screw that is on the carb but right before it attaches to the motor, if that makes any sense!

It's not the carb if you put gas through the spark plug hole.

1:Check the kill switch
2:muffler is important but it should still be igniting without it
3:combustion could be bad as in the O-rings are broken or missing.
4:Valves may have too big of gaps(watch video on adjusting valves)
5:water in the engine
6:more major problems
7:eek:h yea and if the governor linkage is messed up it may not be able to start so if that has been messed with I would try putting it back to factory position

If you have a lawn mower that runs or something else compare the compression of the working one and the non-working one if the non-working one is drastically lower it is the compression.

hope i didnt jump the gun, but i pulled the governer out. where do i find the video you mentioned, do i just google search the engine type?

Chuck some test fuel down the plug hole. If it fires then you have a fuel issue. Easy.
If so, turn the black screw in as far as it goes. Turn the little brass screw in until it stops, then turn it out 2.5 turns. Choke her and try again.
Shall we work from there?

All the governor does as far as starting goes, is hold a part-throttle position until it starts. To eliminate this as a factor, manually hold the throttle at 1/4 to 1/3 open while attempting to start.

sounds like the perfect start to me. im going out there now to try to turn those screws and then ill post my results right away. BRB

On these engines the governor is the throttle. If you can, try putting the governor back in and/or taking a governor off another engine and putting it in. Taking the governor off of these is not necessary. There is a way to limit the governor and increase your speed by at least 30% and it is much safer than taking the governor off. If you want to keep the governor off look up "direct throttle linkage" on YouTube. If you put the governor back in look up "how to bypass the governor" I may make a video soon that can help.

Ok, I went outside and poured a little gas in the sparkplug hole. Nothing happened then I remembered I never put oil in it. Could not having oil cause it to not fire??? Either way after putting the oil in it and putting more gas in the plug hole I tried again, this time it seemed like it almost started, I may still be a little low on oil and need to pic some up. But it ignited the gas and I think that's a good start.

What should I do know??? Anybody got any ideas :D

If your engine is equipped with a low-oil sensor (and it probably is), then yes- it would completely prevent your engine from firing. Top up your oil and try again.

EDIT- Not to rag on you, but the ABSOLUTE first thing you do before attempting to test-fire an engine- CHECK THE OIL!
