Trying to change careers.....

Just for a few friends here:

I've been wanting to change careers....so I got to talking with this old man that had done just about everything....

I told him I was a carpenter but was looking for something else....

I said I was thinking about becoming an electrician....He said I wasn't qualified....that it would take years of apprenticeship to start making any real money....

So I said...."What about a plumber?" He said I wasn't qualified...same deal....

So I said..."What about a truck driver?" He said I needed training and a special drivers license.....

So....frustrated...I remarked..."Well...I'll be a SB!!!

"What did you say?"...he asked.

"I said I'll be a SB!!!!!"

Oh well then!!!!....You're qualified to be a machinist!!!!

It's never too late to learn how to operate/run a manual machine, like what we do here. We have a guy here that is like, 61 I think.....
You already know how to measure crap, but how in depth are your skills? I knew wood working, when I started. I was running a machine, on my own, after only 2 weeks of training. I learned how to cut API rotary shouldered connections first, then moved on to more advanced thread types, and materials. Then, I backstepped, and learned how to turn OD, making stainless flex collars and various other oil field tools. After 20 +years, there isn't a whole lot I haven't seen. (oil field related )
If you have a shop near you, go see if they do trainee programs. It's very rewarding (that's read $$$$$$) if you got some skills and are good at it. I would not still be doing it if it wasn't worth it..... It feeds my big family.....

Machine work is an in demand career. If you can find a small shop that will let you get your foot in the door, run with it! Absorb like a sponge.....
If you were closer here, I could probably find you some type of work in a shop. Welding shops are always looking for someone to run the big grinding machines......

Sadly, even with the insane requirements for electricians, I've seen some pretty poor wiring work in houses I know were done by electricians. Like 'how has someone not died yet' levels of bad.

Machining is pretty easy to get into if you're the type that likes to understand why you do what you do. If not, instead of seeing a logical process it's easy for people to get confused and turned around. Obviously you'll want someone to be able to teach you in the same manner.

If you're in TX, welding may be a good option with all the oil pipelines in the area... I hear there's a good bit of demand. Take that with a grain of salt of course, since that's obviously secondhand information.

Sorry Doug, just thinking that you know the proper usage of the F-bomb doesn't make you machinist material.

Jim, as a trainee, Doug is all yours. While I like him, and count him as a friend( ) I've got a really strong hunch that if he was my trainee he probably wouldn't live to see first break.

Pat, I'm no good with trainees..... I get aggravated quickly,when stupidity strikes. I've made people quit...... Well, I've talked them into quiting. I can tell rather quickly if you got what it takes. When I know you don't, I let you know. It does 1 of 2 things. It either lights a fire under their butt and they shape up. OR they come to the realization that I'm right. Then pack it in. If you don't have "it", then you're more at risk to get hurt. I weed those people out.
My cousin now does the training. He hates it.... He has asked me a couple times to "train that dude"..... LoL..... That means he is ready for a break and wants me to "do my thing". That don't take long. My cousin will let you slide a little. I pull the rope tight......if you get to where you can't breath, it's time to pack it in..... I had/ have 2 nick names here,as a trainer.... Captain A hole or Major (short for ) Richard Head....... I'm pretty proud of those.....

I always hated training new people on my machine. I told them when they first got there, if you think I am an A**hole it means your stupid and you should just leave now. Our goal when new people come in is to see how quickly we can make them quit. I feel I am pretty successful at it too. We go through about 10-15 new people a month.
