Trouble with Honda clone, please help!

I bought a Honda knock-off engine from Northern Tools. It starts and runs instantly. Seems to be a good little engine for my son's go-cart but it was meant more for log splitters and tools that you set the throttle at a certain speed and leave it alone. I bought a throttle linkage kit to allow the throttle to be controlled by the pedal. He said until I remove the governor, to use the stock link arm so I put it back on. My son is only 8 and I don't want to take the governor off.

The throttle response before taking it apart was okay but never fully opened. I looked at it to see how it worked and honestly couldn't see how it was changing the throttle actuator piece on the carb. When I pulled on the hand throttle, it rose in rpm's a bit but wasn't real responsive. *After I put it back together, there is no throttle response and of course the part attached to the carb doesn't move at all. The engine seems to be stuck at max throttle because when I let off the choke, the engine is screaming. *Pull the throttle back and forth and it does nothing. *I don't know what to do next. *My son is getting frustrated and keeps asking me to fix it but I just don't know how?!

you have to take the stock link arm off and put their little one on (it loaks like a coat hanger that was cut and shaped for this application)...the "throttle lever arm"...it is a real pain to get into place but with ALOT of patience you will get it. I placed the pics you requested in the "engines and clutches" forum but they do not show the actual throttle lever arm...tough to get a picture of that

also...I have never removed oil sensor or messed with the governor and no problems to date.

Well, I have put it all back the way it was originally and still not working. Here is what it does:

1. Starts instantly with choke
2. The throttle is about 1/2 to 3/4 open immediately. If I try to close the throttle, it dies.
3. As it warms up, I'll slowly release the choke and it either increases in rpm and stays running or if I try to manually hold the throttle closed, it will stall.

I removed the long spring from the kit and replaced the original. I also remembered the nut that held the throttle arm was fairly tight when I bought the motor so I thought maybe if it's loose, it's making the throttle open too easily. So, I snugged it up just a tad. I can't use the smaller throttle arm that came in the kit or the throttle has zero movement.

Frustrating. Any other help?

Wont idle? is your idle speed screwed up

That nut that is a 10mm should be loose so the throttle mechanism isnt tight or snug at all. It needs to move very freely. In the top pic is it just above/left the spark plug.

Hold the throttle closed like you said with the choke off and turn up the idle screw with a screwdriver until the engine idles. You can see how the throttle butterfly works by looking at the black plastic part that contacts the idle screw.
