Sunday my 10 year old dragged this out of a trash pile and pushed it 3 blocks home. I looked it over and it looks homemade but complete. So its became our project. After cleaning the carb and the tank, I got it started today. It needs some tuning but seems O.K. It also needs a clutch. It not engaging and gets super hot. Also unless I can get the throttle cable rehabed, it needs that too.

Mid 60's maybe? From a kit? Digging the dark copper color. I need to adjust the scrub brakes so the pedal doesn't flop over.

Jacobsen 2 stroke. 1950ish from what I can tell. Originally used on a reel mower. Who can spot the kill switch? I may want to fix that.

Steering wheel look familiar to anyone? The welds are much nicer than the rest of the kart.

I'd like to keep it "as is" as much as possible. with the exception of seat padding. Thoughts?

Nice find!!!! A vertical to horizontal engine conversion. You don't see too many successful ones

It's a 2 stroke. You could run it upside down and it wouldn't make a difference.

Plus that looks like the original configuration. Jacobsen engine... Probably off a powered reel mower.

Edit:. Yeah, the OP actually does mention it's from a reel mower.

I really like that engine. I fix up old engine as a side hobby, to my other side hobbies. I'd love to find something like that in the trash. That oil bath air breather is similar to the Briggs ones used in the 50's and 60's.

Very nice! You can prime those with wd40 sprayed in the carb when you try starting it. No way to tell if it runs till you try. Probably crusty diaphragms but who knows.
