How does that transmission work its gibberish hen I try to read the article.

I think you would need to stop to change gears, to change you would need to un-tension the belt, and move it the the next pulley, then put tension on the belt...

I plan to build something like it this summer... hopefully.

Anderkart, once again sorry about my lack of knowledge about this but how would you remove the governor and if you do that wouldn't the engine just blow. Aldo why's rejecting the carb and what's a making a straight pipe?

Is your engine a Honda 10hp, G400 model like this?

What about 2 different belts coming from a 2 step driver pulley to 2 same sized driven pulleys then make 2 engagement levers, each which tensions it's own belt. Start with the smaller driver, get up to speed and disengage this one and engage the larger driver for a higher ratio. It could be as simple as 2 levers, each with its own tensioner.

Cool Idea... but how about designing the system so just 1-lever:

Engages the low-speed pulley in 1 direction.
And engages the high speed pulley in the opposite direction.
And then slackens both belts, for neutral in the middle...

I haunt seen my engine yet but I will be getting it Saturday. But if you guys could come up with a two speed system that's very simple an cheap please please tell me!! It would be great if you could come up some sorta drawing too. And please explain everything because I know nothing about pulleys and belts!! Thank you guys so much.

My only thought about having a 1 lever system is that it will tension one in and one out. Aren't both supposed to be tensioned in?

you could do the two speed belt tensioner using one lever by setting it up a few ways. the simplest would be:

first section:
the shift lever has a push rod attached to it.
this push rod pushes (or pulls) a lever fixed to a small rotating pin/axle/bolt.

so when you pull the handle towards you it rotates the shaft in one direction, when you push the shift lever away from you it rotates the shaft in the opposite direction.

second section:

on this rotating shaft is 2 levers (not including the one mentioned above) one faces forward, the other faces backwards (in other words they are 180 deg apart, or opposite).
fixed to the end of each lever are belt tensioner, tensioner A is on the left side of lever A, tensioner B is on the right side of lever B, so they each tighten different belts.

when the shaft is rotated cw, one pulley swings up to tension the belt while the other swings down, when the shaft turns ccw, the opposite happens.

hope that makes some sense, :D. you can make it much more complex, but thats the simplest. you would probably want to be able to lock the lever in place, but there are many many ways to do that, you can probably figure something out.

Ok, I have a crazy idea.
First, steal a bike
Then, take the derailer and ALL the sprockets.
Figure out a way to put this 10sp tranny on your kart
Sell the rest of the bike for cash towards your kart

Dave, you forgot the last step.

*Pick up all the pieces of bicycle parts you just scattered because there's no way they'd tolerate the power and speed, and littering ain't cool...
