Transmission humming

We have a gy6 buggy with the cvt transmission in it.
It started making a light humming / gear noise recently. I was told by a repair shop two different things, to put transmission fluid in it via the breather tube or also to put gear oil in it the same way. I am confused here, which one is it???!
They said either one would work...

I would try and he gear oil. It's thicker/ less viscous and will cling to gears better....
