Looking into my transmission options for an offroad kart.

1) standard torque convert belt system with a final chain drive.

2) using a centrifugal clutch on the engine to a chain drive on a 4 speed manual trans from a junk small car.

Both options would be driven by a 16 hp clone engine.

I would like for the kart to do double duty as utv to haul a garden cart around.

Thoughts?:cheers2:

the comet 40 would be a smooth operating system, that would be uncomplicated, and is an excellent option.

the car tranny would be good if you wanted to make a tractor to tow stuff, but not go that fast. someone on here made a tractor with i think a 9hp honda, and a car tranny.

i would choose the comet 40 if you can swing it.

if you do the car tranny thing, i would use a belt tensioner for a better clutch system as far as a manual tranny goes.

Have you ever picked up a 4 speed tranny?? They weigh a ton. Other than that, using one would require alot of finagling to get it to work. You would have to find one that uses a bolt on drive shaft rather than one with a slip yoke. A car tranny would eat up some horsepower too.
