ok guys so the parts are on backorder for that mini/pit bike that im building so im going to get this project done.

here i go....

a few months ago one of my friends said he was selling his riding mower. well i bought it. :roflol: $20 for the thing complete and rolling, and $10 for the 13.5hp briggs. sounds good? well the engine was in pieces. i bought new rings for it, and a few misc. parts, and now the battery is shot. it cranked before but now its totally :mad2: and overflowed acid all over. the engine is electric start only (trust me, i tried to rig on a pull start) because the cylinder is huge and there is no decompression.

this is the murray select and the 13.5hp briggs. pics.

so, i used the wheels and axles to build my kart. well the kart frame i used is not that great. also the steering sucks. the wheels are too big and rub the frame. it wasnt worth it unless i totally redesigned the kart. oh well. now the mower was already apart. so i started building it back up today from the bare frame rails.

here is basically the frame w/o body yet. i have to figure out all the guts underneath and then lastly put the body ontop. heres a pic of that.

see that motor? thats a 6hp briggs. its 17 years old, so not in bad shape at all. the murray select mower is 8 years old. and the 6hp briggs came off a murray pushmower!

i got that engine for free. my friend heard that i built stuff and fixed stuff for a hobby and he said that his dad gave him his old lawn mower because he got a riding mower. so my friend said he would turn it into a go kart but he doesnt have the money or desire to spend a ton of money to get it to work. so he just gave it to me! :wai: i brought it home and checked oil, its good, checked the gas, half full, so i gave it a few primes and it started right up! :D

right after that i took the motor off of the pushmower. and i took it to my shop and realized that i want the flywheel brake taken off it, to make one less lever and one less unnecessary part. after i took the blower cover off, I FOUND A MOUSE NEST! it must have sat a while. (a few years...) anyways, its a good thing that i caught it, or my motor would burn up. all the cooling fins on the head and side of the cylinder were blocked off underneath the shrouds.

heres that mess.

well i got it all back together and cleaned it up a little, although it was taken good care of. i didnt put the tank back on because im thinking of adding an external tank that is bigger and will look better. its the original tank to the riding mower.

heres a shot of the motor. its from 1994. older than me! yeah!

so another thing i did, was take apart and clean all the parts inside the tranny. i added a quart of SAE 5W-30 motor oil and sealed it up. the old gasket was a PITA to scrape off.

update soon.

EDIT: also locked up the differential by welding the gears onto the shaft they pivot on. makes sense!

im going to try somthing like that with a murry mower automatic transmission. 16hp opposed briggs.

ill let you know how it goes with the 5w-30 oil. mine is a 5 speed peerless/tecumseh transaxle. neutral and reverse too of course.

i think i will be using something like a 3" on the engine, 5 or 6" on the transaxle. 18" wheels. i dont know the tranny gear ratios off the top of my head but i have them written down.

yeah. ive got a belt clutch so should i use it or should i make a tensioner?

i can still put it into neutral and start the engine at WOT though and not worry about it taking off.

it was missing the drive belt when i got it so i shortened it 2 inches to use the mower deck belt LOL.

Your work is getting much better blue. For your age I really like the spark you seem to have. Have you thought about going to a mechanics school or college someday? What about deisels?

You can pull start those briggs. Take the mesh thing off the top of the flywheel. Then you will see a cone thingy. Take your pull cord and put a knot at one end and a handle at another. Wrap it around with the knot catching on one on the 3 tabs and pull like heck. Im 13 and I pull start my mowers by this way.

yeah, thanks, im going (i reeeally hope) to bristol tech as a junior (2 year school) and ill take automotive.

I had a transaxle like that, it was filled with poo grease

Agree with bighead entirley, you are getting much better
thanks, mine was filled with thick type of motor oil, its got 5w-30 in it now and its doing fine.

ill try but i dont know if it will fit on this kart at all. the 6hp runs so ill just use that for now and upgrade later.

UPDATE:

got the thing going! brakes work, vice grip shifter works, throttle works, clutch is functioning, so i took it for a test drive!!!

and all i can say is wow. i had it in reverse, and backed up into a pile of scrap metal and an old power wheels car. :wai: the power wheels car was CRUSHED into a tree and then i started to burn out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

its a total slow creeper but it has enough power to tow ANYTHING!

also you can see the home made swing arm to the pit bike that will be worked on this weekend.....

to the left of the pic.

got to install the azusa jackshaft kit... make a sprocket from an aluminum blank, mount the fairings... etc.

umm are you keeping the engine there?. why not use the riding mower body and frame?

i messed them up too much.. like the steering wont fit the way i modded the frame and its too much work.

alot easier to drop it into my kart frame as far as i saw it. i thought the opposite a week ago.

Yea well i would have made it rear engine but i already had a belt and i wanted to try something different that i never see on another go kart.

The way its geared its like a tractor... Haha. Heres a vid of me backing into a hose caddy just because.

Its short but my phone sends in 30 second pieces. So whatever. Heres it.

I think the motor up front may be best. This way there's weight over the front wheels to steer it as well as that beefy frame and your own butt over the rear axle to give the rear tires traction. Also, this will help keep it from wheelie-ing with that transmission because who knows how the torque would pan out with ALL of the weight over the back.

wheelies are a good thing........ lol.....

i took it for another drive today and learned it CANT burn out in 5th gear. 4th is a little on the edge but it works. 5th and the belt just smokes.

its fun to put it in 5th and just let go of the clutch and it lurches really fast... but then it stays pretty slow.

also one thing that happened was while i was closing the gate it jumped into gear and almost ran away from me....
