ok guys so the parts are on backorder for that mini/pit bike that im building so im going to get this project done.
here i go....
a few months ago one of my friends said he was selling his riding mower. well i bought it.
$20 for the thing complete and rolling, and $10 for the 13.5hp briggs. sounds good? well the engine was in pieces. i bought new rings for it, and a few misc. parts, and now the battery is shot. it cranked before but now its totally
and overflowed acid all over. the engine is electric start only (trust me, i tried to rig on a pull start) because the cylinder is huge and there is no decompression.
this is the murray select and the 13.5hp briggs. pics.
so, i used the wheels and axles to build my kart. well the kart frame i used is not that great. also the steering sucks. the wheels are too big and rub the frame. it wasnt worth it unless i totally redesigned the kart. oh well. now the mower was already apart. so i started building it back up today from the bare frame rails.
here is basically the frame w/o body yet. i have to figure out all the guts underneath and then lastly put the body ontop. heres a pic of that.
see that motor? thats a 6hp briggs. its 17 years old, so not in bad shape at all. the murray select mower is 8 years old. and the 6hp briggs came off a murray pushmower!
i got that engine for free. my friend heard that i built stuff and fixed stuff for a hobby and he said that his dad gave him his old lawn mower because he got a riding mower. so my friend said he would turn it into a go kart but he doesnt have the money or desire to spend a ton of money to get it to work. so he just gave it to me!
i brought it home and checked oil, its good, checked the gas, half full, so i gave it a few primes and it started right up!
right after that i took the motor off of the pushmower. and i took it to my shop and realized that i want the flywheel brake taken off it, to make one less lever and one less unnecessary part. after i took the blower cover off, I FOUND A MOUSE NEST! it must have sat a while. (a few years...) anyways, its a good thing that i caught it, or my motor would burn up. all the cooling fins on the head and side of the cylinder were blocked off underneath the shrouds.
heres that mess.
well i got it all back together and cleaned it up a little, although it was taken good care of. i didnt put the tank back on because im thinking of adding an external tank that is bigger and will look better. its the original tank to the riding mower.
heres a shot of the motor. its from 1994. older than me! yeah!
so another thing i did, was take apart and clean all the parts inside the tranny. i added a quart of SAE 5W-30 motor oil and sealed it up. the old gasket was a PITA to scrape off.
update soon.
EDIT: also locked up the differential by welding the gears onto the shaft they pivot on. makes sense!
