I have a craftsman with the 6 speed forward. It has the shifter in the center between your legs.
When its not running i can go thru the gears easily. When running it stays stuck in gear with brake applied unless i rock forward and back.
Not sure if its a coincidence but i just replaced the drive belt but dont see how that would cause this.

Any ideas guys ?

with "running" you mean the engine is running
not the vehicle is moving, correct?

If so, IIRC there's a belt tensioner that's been disengaged by the brake
(which basically acts as a belt clutch)

Peek under it and see if that's still working properly or not,
might be as minor as a wrong routed belt or a missing spring.

With unsynchronised gears you can't shift (nicely) when the input shaft is turning of course..

Maybe a pic could help (you know.. belt and such ;))

I had a similar issue with my riding mower with a FNR transaxle; turned out to be a maladjusted belt guide...

All I'm saying is it's probably something seemingly insignificant; double check everything you touched during the belt change...

the belt is too tight. It wont shift cause the belt is got pressure on it and its spinning still.

I bet you can be driving at a steady rpm and hit neutral huh ? Kinda like shifting with no clutch in a car. I am a small engine mechanic and work at a lawn mower shop for a living. This is the only thing it can be unless the trans is broke internally which they ususally dont do or a pulley has bad bearings in it.
