Does anyone have any ideas as to how tracked vehicles deliver power to each track independently with one motor!? Is it a belt tensioner type system off of a jackshaft? Also, does anyone know a source where tracks could be purchased? I'd assume making a frame and drive for the track could be a DIY project.

What they do, if I am not mistaken is apply the brake on the side they want to turn to. So my guess is that there is a differencial involved, so that only one side gets slowed/stopped, and the other revolves at full speed.

Now if you are refering to how they stick one side in reverse, and the other in forward... then I believe the normal engine block actually has two sides to it, both having a seperate axle, as well as both having the ability to work independant of the other.

hydraulics in some cases. You could use a differential and brakes, that would be the most simple method.

hey red , there is a guy on ebay that sells plans for a tracked veh. , the tracks are made from semi tires with the walls cut out, cool idea, I bought a set but havent done anything with them because I dont have a bender, some day I will. In his plans the set-up is a belt tentioner set-up.

T-man! You leaked the piece of info I wanted most. Production tracks are very expensive. Any other info you would like to leak? (PLEASE!)

red, well it isn't much of a secreat but what he did was cut out the walls of the tires, then with eather a table saw or grinder he cut cross ways, through the rubber.. NOT cutting deap enough down to the wire/cords, this allows the flexing and the tank track look.
