I currently run a comet 30 series converter on my cart right now. I am currently upgrading my engine to a 11hp Clone. My question is what is the difference between symmetrical and asymmetrical converters. I noticed that the 30 series is a symmetrical and the 40 is asymmetrical. I just want to be sure that it is going to work on the current setup that I have.

Actually you have it backwards, the 30 is asymmetrical(one side of belt/pulleys is flat), 40 is symmetrical(V belt). So long as it fits the engine and fits in the cart you are good to go.

Hey Mike,
I'm not sure what engine your running now, (?) but you might find that new 11-hp has a bigger (driven-pulley) shaft size. Like maybe a 1"... Although Comet does offer the 30 series for 1" motor shaft size, yours might only be a 3/4".

Another thing to consider here is... according to Comet's web site info (found here: http://www.hoffcocomet.com/comet/oem-torque-converters.asp ) Your 30 series Converter is only rated for use with up to 8-hp engines. The 40 series converters are rated up to 18-hp and might be a better choice if you find yours no longer fits on that new motor.

Seems like I've ran across some guys posting that they'd successfully ran 30 sires converters on 10-hp and bigger motors. I'd imagine your gearing and overall kart weight would make a big diference in how well your curent converter and its belts will hold up with your new 11-hp.

Thanks for the info. I am planning on getting the 40 series because first of all I will be going from a 3/4 inch shaft on the old motor to a 1 inch. I just wanted to verify that the new 40 series would be compatible with my setup.

So then you'll have to go ahead and replace both the motor and the driven pulleys, plus the belt to all matching 40 series components. I dont think you can mix and match any components between 30 and 40 series converters. Were you running a Comet Tav system or a separate jack-shaft type setup before with your old motor? (cause I dont think you can install 40 series pulleys in the Tav housing...)

Yes I will be replacing the entire system including belt. I hope that I will get good speed from it, but we will see.
