torque converter spring replacement

im replacing the spring in my torque converter and basically have no idea of what im doing. i know how the thing comes apart and goes back together my question is does the spring have any preload thats supposed to be on it or anything or do i just stick the tabs in the holes and tighten everything back down? btw i have never worked on a motor with a torque converter before so bare with me

The drive clutch or the driven clutch? 20/30 series or 40/44 series?

i dont know what series it is but heres a pic, im relacing the spring in what i believe is the driven clutch, the one that drives the chain and axle, the one towards the right in the picture

Right- That's a 30/TAV2. and the unit on the right is the driven. The spring is preloaded. What's wrong with the old one? Broken?

yea the old one broke, so what im asking is how do i put it back correctly to prevent another spring failure

Been a long dang time since I tore into one. IIRC, you put the spring in the hole, and turn it about a third of a turn so that when you bolt the two halves together, the preload holds the cam against the buttons. Make sure the buttons are in good condition.

well here is what it looked like assembled new problem now, one part of the driven clutch is spinning faster then the other part and nearly destroyed this spring like the last one, anybody know what im talking about or seen this problem?

also how do i determine the driven clutch bore?

That's part of the problem- you're missing some of the cam buttons I mentioned. Bore? Take it off and measure.

it was running for quite a while without those buttons why fail now? btw im not sure if they were on there when we bought it either way its my little brothers kart my dad is ready to just buy a new driven clutch

oh i believe you lol, just trying to troubleshoot this whole thing, first time dealing with a torque converter here, like i said may wind up replacing the entire driven clutch

That's probably not necessary, once you have all the correct parts. The buttons keep the outer sheave from over- or under-extending.

Is it possible to replace the engine clutch (torque converter) with a max torque Go kart belt drive clutch for 3/4 bore A/B sect belt???? Thanks

Bore measuring

Zacmac1003, I used a measuring chum to measure the inner of my clutch. They are cheap and will measure inner and outter!
