Torque Converter Problems

Hey guys. I had recently working on "restoring" and old go kart with a comet drive. I am having problems with it. When i go and start the engine, the converter half engages. should it not move my axle at all or should it do this. I need advice on how to fix this. what i want is it to not engage until i give it some throttle.

Post some pictures, better yet a video from you tube. We are going to need some more information before we can help you out.

Half engages could be a number of things: the torque converter drive and driven could be mis-aligned, or too far apart (belt could be too small). The engine could be idling too high.

The torque converter could be dirty, and need a good cleaning (which I'm leaning towards).

Your torque converter should not cause your kart to creep when the engine is idling, and the kart is on a level surface

Hey guys< i did clean the top portion of the converter. That did make a difference. But it still wont sit at idle. The bottom portion (spring mechanism) always stays shut. how do i "clean" that?

Im having trouble getting the pictures from my ipod to here. Ill try the teflon and i do have a snap ring plyers. Thanks for all the advice. Ill try to get pictures on here soon.

Where's your chain? It also looks like the flat part of the driver and driven aren't in line, but that may just be the camera angle.... Come to think of it, is that driven unit backwards?

Yeh, you got that driven unit on there backwards. The 2 1/2 degree sides have to run the flatter side of the belt while the 18 degree side has to run the angled side. The sprocket normally rests between the 2 1/2 side face of the driven unit and the bearing, but you could put a spacer there and run the sprocket on the other side of the jackshaft.

^ this all assumes that that is a 30 series asymetrical tc. Also, you may want to get a new belt if you've run that one like that for any prolonged amount of time.
