have a comet 30 series tav with a jackshaft on my cart. for some reason the driver is having problems. its properly lubed, all that good stuff. has worked great for a few years now. when i put it on my shaft and put my bolt in, it seems to lock it all together so my shaft wont spin. seems like its somehow pinching it or something. anyone else ever have this problem, how do i fix it?

thanks

Funny you said that, I'm having a similar issue. Where all have you lubed the clutch? I think that tightening it down TOO tight causes this. I put mine on snug and Loctite'd the bolt into the motor's shaft and that seems to have solved it.

well as before i had this problem i could tighten it down and eventually it would get somewhat tight then the whole crank would spin with it. then i had to grab the pull start so the crank wouldnt spin and tighten the bolt down more. now i tighten it and it just gets tight and pinches the whoel setup.

Yes, I too used the pull string method to tighten it, but that caused it to bind. I'd pull the rope out 6" and it would stop. I backed off the bolt 1/2 turn and it was free.

what engine you have on your kart? could you list exactly what you have on the crank, starting from the end of the crank, moving towards the engine, like this,
bolt
washer
driver cover plate
weight pack
ect

maybe the shaft is too short and is jamming up against the belt?

i have:

bolt
small washer
big washer
cover plate/shroud
spindle type thingie
weight pack
inside shroud

referring to this picture:
http://www.mfgsupply.com/GoMiniClutchTorqTAV2parts.html/mv_session_id=qXnRi5KW

its all setup right. its worked before with the exact same clutch on this exact engine. the engine is a 6.5 hp harbor freight clone.

if on that picture i leave on only parts 9 and up on the crank, the bolt goes on/in correctly. when i add the rest of the pieces it somehow binds up. the screw will start to tighten down and then just gets super tight. like it pinches the crank. normally it screws down and then itill spin the crank when im turning the wrench. not now. it binds.

please help

not sure if im understanding this correctly, but the bolt tightens down before it tightens down on the rest of the assembly??

IF thats the case, sounds like the bolt has stretched out too much.. (all bolts stretch out on tightening.. its the way they work,)

try puttin another washer on, or replacing the bolt..

(thats if i understand this correctly... o_O)

That can't be right! We'd have 300 noobs a day asking why their CVT keeps jamming and/or falling off!

If you're referring to my method, then yes, it's strange. I have cut down the bolt to 1 1/2" because it was too long but if I pull out the rope and crank down on it with a socket wrench, the whole unit binds and I can't pull the rope out more than 6". After I backed the bolt off 1/2 turn, the whole unit was still snug, and after the LocTite cured, it's solid. The outer cover can spin freely but only deflects maybe 1/32" with the current setup. Between my motor and bolt it goes backplate, large washer, lathed spacer (for alignment), flat face, moving face, weights, outer cover, Comet outer washer thing, and bolt. Sorry for the iffy photo, I had to hold my phone upside down and aim without seeing the screen while leaning over the seat back. The kart is crammed in the garage because I won't let my baby live outside.

No, no.I wasn't referring to your method, I was referring to the problem. It is my opinion that if everything is correct, and you NORMALLY can't tighten these properly, we'd get all these posts.

maybe its got something to do with them being clones? maybe, just maybe the crank gets pulled by the bolt a bit and jams something internally?

redsox, that belt looks kinda small for that tc, maybe htats jamming it? maybe your 1" to 3/4" adapter is interfering? is that a pile of metal shavings on the tc back plate?

i'm just thinking out loud here.

EDIT: vandancouver, the engine in the picture doesn't appear to be a clone(or any slant cylinder engine), maybe i'm just looking at it the wrong way.

it tightens down like it should. it just pinches everything to tight. weird because this exact setup has worked. it starts to snug up then the whole thing jyst gets tight and the crank wont spin

The outer cover should never have play, it should be held tight in the main hub and the thick lock washer.

Occasionally you are required to use a thin 3/4" washer to space between the hub and backing plate on certain belts. If the belt is too wide it has potential to jam the system.
