Torque converter or chain first?

Rebuilt stock jackshaft and now ready to install. New torque converter driven on one end and sprocket/chain on other. Have not ordered TC belt yet cuz crank to JS center distance was not known. Seems that chain should be installed and tightened and that would determine correct c/c distance so TC belt can be ordered accordingly. Are my thoughts right on this? thanks

huh? post some pictures. The distance between the engine shaft and jackshaft should not be adjustable.

You are correct as far as alignment with the slots for mounting on the JS. The slots for mounting on the frame are perpendicular so the JS can be adjusted both directions. The pic shows slots on the frame plate (only left side is shown but right side is same.)

good point.. but no.. belt first!

belt play (or pulley distance for that matter) is much more critical than sprocket distance...
or let me put it another way:
it's easier (cheaper) to remove one more link from a chain than it is to buy a belt of different size ;)

within the distance of a link of chain or two, you can (or at least should be able to) adjust both.. the jackshaft and then the engine according to it to regain ideal pulley distance.

So .. mount the engine centered in it's slots; do the same with the jacksahft and measure the center of PTO to the center of the jackshaft.
pick the closest belt to that and mount it (adjusting both.. engine and jackshaft to meet the ideal pulley distance for that belt)
then fit in the chain...
you should have enough wiggle room on the engine and the jackshaft slots to perfectly adjust the chain (there are half links just in case you need one)
