Torque Converter Mounting Question

Hey folks - the answer to this may be obvious when you see the photo - but when mounting the Comet torque converter plate to the side of the engine case - is it critical that the engine shaft be exactly centered when it bolts up?

It seems like it should - but I'm having a heck of a time even getting two of the bolts on the case to align - in order to get the aluminum plate mounted reasonably close to being centered.

I would say yes.
In order to get your CD center distance, and proper alignment, it should be centered.

Is that a genuine Comet, or a clone? I'm just wondering whether the holes are "out" in the CVT backplate, or the engine block.

Perhaps you could slot or hog out the holes in the backplate to bring it into alignment.

It's an older used but genuine Comet 20 series.

Good idea on slotting out the holes. I'm having a hard time getting just two to line up - but 4 would be optimal.

It's a briggs 6.5 by the way - but it's nearly exactly the same as the clone engines I've worked with. I'm really surprised the holes are not lining up correctly.
