I bought a used kart with a 13hp Honda gx and a mostly missing torque converter. how do I find out what one I need to replace it? are they universal as far as hp?

Step one is identifying what you already have, then determine its suitability. Just because it was on there, does not necessarily mean it's correct. From there, it's either sourcing the missing componentry (driven unit, belt, jackshaft, etc) or an entirely new and appropriate setup. Pics would be great.

Looking at the TC on the 13HP, it looks like you have a TAV2 30 series with the backplate. I linked an example and a pic. This is totally inadequite for the 13HP that it is on. They are only rated for 8HP. You could maybe push a genuine comet to 11HP, but even then you will be shredding belts constantly

I would advide that you try and sell what is left of the 30 series to fund getting a comet 40 series TC (or equivalent). That is all that will work with the 13HP

judging by the cam size, that looks to be about 7" wide..
so it's NOT a TAV2 backplate (because that's too small to fit a driven that big)

but then again, the driven looks more to be a series 20 to be honest...
(chamfered edge on the cam as opposed to a straight edge on the series 40)
Was there A TAV1 with a series20??
Never seen that before.

could you make some pictures of the driver.
and the sheaves please to see if it's a symmetric or asymmetric set up.

The driver looks to be no driver at all ATM, more like just a pulley,
I might be wrong though ;)

yeh. I havnt taken anything off. what you see is what I bought. I know nothing about TCs so I have no idea what you were saying. LOL I do know I would prefure to replace the whole thing aside from the backplate if I don't have to. think that would be possible?

Honestly, Lou- I think you're better off to take that stuff off and set it aside for a future project. Anything smaller than a Comet 40 (which that is NOT) just simply isn't up to the task of tolerating 13hp. I do think that's why you have half a CVT. The PO probably switched engines, and the drive clutch was a 3/4" shaft- hence the standard pulley on there.

think your right doc. I can tell theres been plenty of shooty work done to it. pretty shore they put bigger tires on it too cuz it barely turns before the tires contact the frame.

And another question, engine is 1" keyed shaft, jackshaft (or other end of the tc) is 3/4". How do I know if the tc is the right size at both ends? They all just say 3/4" or 1".

40 series components (Drive unit, driven unit, and belt) are sold as seperate components, to be tailored to your needs. Sooo- You need to shop for a 1" driver, and a 3/4" driven. While you're shopping, measure as accurately as possible the center-to-center distance between the engine's PTO shaft, and the jackshaft. Reference this on a Comet belt chart like this one, and be sure to select the correct belt. Fitment must be precise.

series 40 torque converters do NOT come in a kit.
you have to buy a driver (1") and a driven (3/4") seperately

http://gokartsupply.com/4044seri.htm

Don't forget to measure crankshaft-jackshaft centerdistance and order the correct belt..
gokartsupply will be right at your service to figure out the correct belt length as soon as you know the distance, I'm sure :D
