Torque converter backing plate

Trying to mount the backing plate on my B&S 8hp engine. The rear is hitting the fins on the back of the engine and will not allow my to align the bolt holes. The rear needs to be lifted a fraction of an inch. Is it ok to grind down some of the backing plate that is touching the fins, grind down some of the fins, or a combination of both? I don't have to go far as seen in the first picture.

Give me an 8 million dollar helicopter and I can fly it all day, give me a $100 engine and I'm at a loss. Being this is my first kart I've ever put together, looking for inputs to a solution. Thanks for any help.

Most of the time a little modification is needed when installing these, so yeah, it's ok as long as you don't take a whole mess of structure out of it.

Aluminum* is so soft, I use a jigsaw with an old wood or metal blade.
Aluminum will clog up a grinding wheel pretty quick.






*Aluminium for you crumpet munchers.

Raise the engine up with some sort of spacer until it's up high enough for the back of the plate to be lowered to clear the engine. Then the bolt holes will line up. That's the proper way to do it without cutting off parts of the torque converter or the engine.
