Hello,

I am working on a frankensteined Kenbar Streaker kart. The rig is equipped with a Honda GX120 motor mounted on a Peerless 855/860 transaxle.

For more background info feel free to see my previous post here:
http://www.diygokarts.com/vb/showthread.php?t=14827

The GX120 has a shaft diameter of 3/4" (Is this called a Jackshaft?)

The input shaft diameter on the transaxle is 3/4" as well.
The transaxle is comonly used on ride on seed spreaders and then also medium duty tractor lawn work equipment. It appears to be a good quality transaxle.

According to Peerless this transaxle works really well with a Comet 20,30 or 40 series Torque Converters. So my next step is to pick out the right converter. And this is where I could use some help.

The engine is only rated for 4 hp so I am thinking on sticking with a 20 (maybe a 30) series to save a few bucks.

Some other specs:
The center to center distance of the shaft is roughly 9"

I was looking here http://www.gokartsupply.com/tavapp.htm , for example, and I am unsure of what I need. Is this a complete kit? There are other terms I am unfamiliar with; for example it says that the "Kit is For #40,41 or 420 Chain, 10 Tooth Sprocket" How does that apply in my case. My kart doesn't have a chain but it goes straight to the transaxle? Info is greatly appreciated.

Thank you for reading.

You do not really need a kit, just the driver, driven and belt.
bmikarts.com had some half price CLONE comet stuff when I last looked. Depending on your budget. Since your engine is 4hp, and a genuine comet 30 is up to 8hp, then the fake should be ok if you are on a tight budget.

Comet 20 are obselete as far as you know.

The tav30 and tav2 are the kit form of the comet 30. Please bear in mind that they use a 5/8" "jackshaft" or bore of the tc on the driven. you need 3/4, sold by MFG below.

The engine shaft is not a "jackshaft", but a crankshaft or PTO. A jackshaft is a "slave" shaft that you can mount sprockets or pulleys on to change ratios or change the drive side.
Here is another REPUTABLE source of comet goods. They do not and have not sold fakes.

The chain:
The kit is installed like this

You can see later on in the vid where the chain exits the TC.

Does the tranny have gears or a gear reduction inside? If not, your kart will not move, and will be geared for 150mph or something.

If you are installing directly to
I hope that helps.

I just got of the phone with Don (the contact info I got from used2jeep). I picked his brain a little and he ended up giving me a link to MFG supply. I pretty much ordered things you said I would need (driver, driven and the belt). Don got me the chart with the belt sizes so I made sure I got the right one.

As far as the transmission goes it is geared, it has three speeds and a reverse. It is really hard to find concrete info on the transaxle but I am 90% sure it is a peerless 855/860. Now, from what I was reading the 855 is more for ride on seed spreaders while the 860 is for medium duty lawn tractors...The nuts thing is that I can't identify exactly whether it is a 855 or an 860. Can't really ID it, no tags. Maybe open her up and starting counting teeth to determine the ratios? The difference from what I gather is in the gearing: the 855 has a top speed of 6mph while the 860 is good for 25+mph, I believe. So I hope If have the 860 :).

The converter will be bolted up directly. No jackshaft ;). I watched youtube videos to help me out with the jargon. Thanks for your explanation.

All parts are ordered, now just sit tight and wait for the goodies!!!
