too much power for torque converter

I have a built 212cc predator.

according to what I have modded it with I would guess its pushing between 10-13 HP.

maybe more.

I have a 3/4 inch shaft on my engine and my torque converter is slipping when I mash it on steep hills and on hard terrain.

I have a 40 series but its a 1" bore and wont work.

is there a sleeve or a way to modify the shaft on my engine to install the 40 series

any suggestions to keep the 30 series installed and make it work better for the added horsepower and higher revs?

I know they werent desigend to turn 6 or 7 thousand RPMS so what am I to do?

Only thing I can think of is is contacting a local machine shop and give them the specs for a sleeve and see if they can make one for a series 40 setup. I haven't seen a sleeve for sale on the web, but it sounds like you have too much invested in your 212 to buy another engine. Unless you want to sell it and buy a predator 420. More hp stock and mine is so far bullet proof.

i have a 16 hp briggs v twin vanguard I was gonna put that on.


this cart is for my ten yr old but its wearing out belts pretty quick

guess we'll just have to deal if there arent any other options

It shouldn't be too hard to make or have made an adaptor bushing. 3/4" ID, 1" OD, with the appropriate keyways. Have a good look around here. I believe it's been done (without special tools) at least once around here.

ive been lookiing

even asked my buddy who is a machinist if he could make me a hub or some type of conversion and he said it looks tough.

maybe if I gavee him ideas or diagrams on how to do it he could bring something to life

This has been done many times; here's one. The important thing to remember is you need a rectangular key stock to make it work, as seen here

As for being "a bit tough" it's simply a matter of finding a piece of 1" OD tube with a 1/8" wall thickness or 3/4" pipe & machine down the OD to size (pipe is measured by ID, tube is measured by OD) & milling a 3/16" slot along it

I will just go ahead and order the part.

can you use one of these on a jack shaft too?

I believe the 40 series is 3/4 or 7/8 on the driven. Currently I am using a 5/8 jackshaft

Ill have to look into doing this.

I need to make such an adaptor myself. To start with, you could get what i got. Any good farm machinery store (Got mine at Tractor Supply) carries 3-Point Hitch conversion bushings. They have a 3/4"ID, a 1" OD, are (IIRC) about 1 1/2" long, and are steel. Good starting point.

EDIT- The only potential fault I see with the above Grainger unit is the keyway. 3/16", which IS what you need on the 3/4" shaft. However, the Comet 40 has a cast-in 1/4" key that must be dealt with, too. Shouldn't bee too hard.
