To rebuild, or not to rebuild...

I have an older Flat Head alcohol blue wazoom that has a cracked block. I havent torn it apart yet, but it looks as if the the rod broke & put two 1 inch cracks parallel to one another on the side of the block. My question is, is this worth getting a new block & internals to rebuild, or is this motor past its time & not worth the $?

how much would it cost to rebuild? how much would it cost to get a new one? factor in the time to source parts and for the actual rebuild, then decided if that makes the extra money for a new one worth it.

How much, & is it the same block? I'm assuming my wazoom is a 5hp. I have a spare 3hp briggs block, not sure if it would work as a replacement though. I asume the piston sizes & bore are different with the increase in HP. I have a running (new to me complete) Honda gx270 that i was going to use in place of this motor for my project. Just wasn't sure if this was a rare motor that would warrant rebuilding.

Go ahead and source a replacement block. There's nothing quite so rewarding as doing a "Lazarus" on a dead engine. Eff the clone.

You could try taking the block to a machine shop. They might could fix the block if it's not really bad, but you might could buy a replacement block for less, but it depends on what the machine shop might charge.

I hate to question your thinking (as it's usually so good) but, is it really "doing a Lazarus" if it's a new block?

I mean, it's a bit like "Grampa's old axe; two new heads & three new handles but it's still the same ol' axe?

Oh, hey, I'm not saying that by any means. For sure, rebuilding/repairing anything is always better that creating more landfill. What I meant was is it really rebuilding if you get a new block?
