Alright guys I’m new here and know very little about go karts I’m a mechanic and can work on about anything but when getting into technical stuff with smaller things like this I’m out of my wheel house. That being said I got my kids a vector 6hp go kart and put on a predator ghost 212 “16hp” motor and I’m trying to figure out if I can run a 19 or 21 inch tire in the rear. We live in a mountainous area with plenty of large hills but also fields the boys can ride in also and I’m just trying to get some extra ground clearance because the axle sprocket only has about 2 inches of clearance. If I go that large am I gonna kill all torque and take off for the hills or will I be okay? Any help will be greatly appreciated thank you in advance.

We can help you there. To hold that much power (16hp) you would need a 40 series CVT system. But hat engine probably does not make that much power. Probably about 9 hp. You are going to need a CVT no matter what though. I would recommend staying with a 19” tire a 6:1 gear ratio and a 30 series TAV II CVT system. But make sure you use a Genuine Comet belt. The cheap jungle store CVTs are just as good as the original Comet TAV II. But about 1/3 the price and Comet parts will interchange 40 series chain and sprockets axle sprocket 60 teeth and drive sprocket of 10 teeth will get you there!
I’ll also advise you to go to the Gokart Supply website and look up and read the section on CVTs. Lots of good information there. There is also a gear ratio calculator.
Good luck!

Thanks Denny! I’ve got it going with a 30 series system right now with the 19’s. it’s a 10 tooth front sprocket with a 62 tooth rear, and it seems to be going pretty decent for now. Unfortunately I’m on the last of my 6 cheap belts haha. didn’t wanna mess up a decent quality belt and spend a bunch of money on them in the trial and error stages. With the original 16 inch tires I completely destroyed two different belts in a 20 minute each test run because they couldn’t handle the rpm’s would be my guess. I’ve actually just been being kinda easy on it since I put on this last one because I don’t know that belts are gonna really hold up so I haven’t been going more than 1/2 - 2/3 throttle. Will a Kevlar or genuine comet belt really last that much better? The two three packs I bought were cheap junk just don’t know much about drive belts for these things and don’t know that it wouldn’t be a better route to go all chain drive if the belts aren’t gonna hold up to the power this little thing is putting out. If the power is there I’d like to be able to use it. I’ve also been considering putting the 19’s on the front if they won’t hinder the turning radius to much or I can extend the control arms and putting 21’s on the rear with changing to a 7.20:1 ratio “72 tooth rear sprocket”. If the thing only runs 20-30 mph that’s fine so long as it will get there quickly. I’d like to be able to let the boys play in the mud with it and what not and be able to kinda sling it around so I’m looking for more torque than anything for takeoff uphill and typical abuse around our farm lol. Thanks for any other input or suggestions you have like I said I’m new to these things and have just been going off research I’ve found around google and a few older gentleman I know around town.
