Hi,

I just purchased a go kart that needs 4 new tires. Would a 145/70-6 tire be interchangeable with a 14.5x7-6? From what I can tell, the 145/70-6 is about 1/2" shorter and 1" narrower. Is my understanding correct?

You're very close...

14.5x7-6 is an imperial tyre, all numbers are inch dimensions:
14.5" overall height
7" wide
fits a 6" rim

145/70-6 is a metric tyre; the numbers here are a bit more confusing:
145 is the tread width in millimetres
70 is the side wall height, as a percentage of the tread width, which translates to 101.5mm
again, fits a 6" rim...

So, the size of the metric tyre is:
5.7" wide
overall tyre height is 353mm or 13.8" (101.5+101.5+152(6"))
