This is my tin can sub, it is powered by calcium carbide. It sinks until the top float seals the hatch. And fills the cup with water, Then the carbide makes gas(acetyline)and expels the water out of the jet tube it runs under water about 20 ft and surfaces runs about 30 ft on the surface then dives again. When the gas pressure runs out enuff to let water in the lower value again. Cycle repeats until you lose the sub on the lake bottom.

I was digging it till the last sentence. Lose it on the bottom.

Tie a fishing pole line to it? Maybe a few hooks? Mike make for a good self propelled lure?

Thanks , fishing line is used.... Bigger is better right? Here's a link to the plans from a 1950s popular mechanics. www.toycannons.ray-vin.com/plans/sub.htm build tip .... You'll never find the film tube roll, I used a brass 357 shell and copper Penny's sanded flat . For the valves and a PVC glue can with a screw off lid for the hatch.

I darn sure wouldn't want to use it anywhere near a dam. Probably be a good way to get shot as a terrorist.

Well, they won't like my next one then.. it's going to be big coffee cans (#10) and a quart paint can for the conning tower and use about 20.00 (4 lbs.) in calcium carbide to run it. It's going to look REALLY suspicious. I'll leave my model rockets out of this Convo. :smiley_omg: :bannana:

Instead of using two pieces for the one end, get a big coffee can or a piece of tin. Have fun building it... Ah the good ole days when kids played with torches and took their cub scout knives to school without problems...., I won't even mention ROTC. giving out bullets and bayonets.:smiley_omg:

I remember having some sort of plastic one when I was a kid. I don't remember what the fuel was. Might have been alka-seltzer for all I know.

Parts of MPLS and some of the suburbs don't know how lucky they are that hobby stores didn't sell "F" engines. :D

Thanks Chancer, I know I have a warped sense of humor and an unhealthy taste for adventure. I'm going to build a regular kart for going into the 6" round storm drains.... They look like a tobogun run to me. :sifone::idea2:

The 1/4 scale sidewinder missile gets a lot of attention . PS Never put a mouse in the clear payload rocket. They don't handle it to well....

You guys crack me up.

Kart for the drains? Lots of negative camber. Like those stupid drifter wannabees.

Or a cube with wheels on top too. Then you could do barrell rolls.

There is thousands of miles of them under the streets. They take the storm run off to the coyote Creek, San Gabriel, Santa Ana and LA River and then dump it into the gravity mains that go to the beach. A mini bike would run these "private" race tracks nicely. Because of the draught they are typically dry. But they all got a good cleaning today..(It's been raining) and would be a great tyme to run them in a day or two before the litter gets in them again.
