I get the car rant thing. My daughter's first car was a 1990ish Ford something (don't remember) that her Aunt gave her. The alternator wen tout and was located under the engine between the black and the crossmember. The only way to replace it was to remove the engine from the car, which itself was a project just to prepare for that. I was so pissed about it that I put a new battery in it, drove it to Carmax and traded it in on a car for her.

A friend had an Audi that required the entire front clip be removed to replace the water pump. That was an all day project.

I also lease my wife a new car every 3 years. This keeps in her in maintenance free mode and she gets bored with the car after about 2 years anyway - so everyone stays happy. I have an old Ford F150 or my bikes - paid for a long time ago and I do all the maintenance.
