Probably an hl42a. Very old (50-60 years?) chainsaw carb. Parts really hard to come by. Best bet would be upgrading to newer Tillotson. Any hl has same mounting flange. Internal or external pulse line and venturi and bore sizes have to be matched up.

I guess my my question is, will any HL rebuild kit fit?
No. Could possibly be one of several or non at all. Non of these contain throttle shafts or butterflies. All of these numbers can be cross referenced to specific carbs. There is no listing for HL42a.
Unknown which will work.

I might be able to help but need a couple of things:
Can you supply 3 dimensions indicated in illustration?
Diameter throttle bore, venturi (narrowest internal point of carb body), and choke bore. Use a digital caliper for accurate measurement.
And does it have internal or external pulse line?

internal pulse line

choke is between 7/8 and 15/16ths

throttle is between 3/4 and 7/8ths

venturi is probably around 5/8ths, not sure though.

I dont have a caliper so that is the best I can do

Life just got easier my friend. Go to Ebay and search for HL239b.
It has external pulse line and is easily workable on Briggs 5hp.
They are NOS (new old stock) and at $30 are too good to pass up. Because of age (around 30 years old), may need new diaphragms and gaskets. Can turn brittle over time and lack of use from sitting on shelf.
Sometimes they are usable right out of the box.
Kit #DG-5-HL makes 'em like new.
