I would give you some originality. I've never heard of a machine that would shred belts as fast as your's would! Amazing! :roflol:

Just kidding. I think you have a cool idea and great resources (engine); however, I think you could have a better idea and better resources if you, as others have said, sold the engine and got a "proper" one for the job. Even if you had a Ferrari engine, I don't think putting it in a kart and using a sub-par clutch would be worth having the only Ferrari powered go kart in the world.

It's up to you in the end, whether you're more interested in originality or practicality.

Oh and another thing, not everyone down here has the "must do" spirit you're talking about. I'm just a good ol' boy from Alerbamer, but I appreciate appropriate accessories for my machines.

ok mechtichian at least give me some originality on this project
Originality is only a positive feature if you plan on taking the thing to Burning Man this year, and possibly lighting it on fire while peaking on acid. If you want it to actually work and be fun to drive, originality can bite you in the anus. Why re-invent the wheel, as they say.

Just so we're crystal clear on your belt drive system, are you relying on the belt's slip & grip characteristics alone to transmit power, or do you have a pedal operated tensioner (like a riding mower)? After re-reading the thread a few times I noticed you mentioned "like a lawnmower" several times in reference to your belt drive. With a pedal operated tensioner the belts may survive, but not if you're relying on them to grip under their own friction as the driveshaft rpm increases.

Details man, details!

there will be a lever like a shift that will hold the spring tension in place while driving and released when starting or stopping

I don't know about the whole "can do/ can't do" thing... I wouldn't go so far as to say, "Hey, give up pal, it's not going to work!" There are some valid opinions floating around here, that suggest that you're going to run into some problems- and you certainly are. There are potential solutions being offered up, too.

If you want something that's going to be brilliant pretty much right out of the gate, you've got an uphill battle. If you want original, you're on the right track.

For my own personal opinion, well, you've heard it, and I'll say it again. The belt system seems sub-par to me. I personally think that if you can adequately feed the cooling system, it'll be okay. I also think the engine has the potential to have sufficient power with the right gearing. Your driveline is the weak link.

But you know what? Anything great ever created was an uphill battle. Things almost never work out the first time unless you're just using tried-and-true methods. As long as you're prepared to accept that, then build on!

can u get a 65 hp cent clutch or do they make 3/4 inch snowmobil clutches

the belt system could work but it needs improvment

our 250hp PTO engine on the farm is belt tensioner but is has 4 belts
u need to switch to at least three V belts because those flat belts are useless if there is any moisture in the air
also they are just generrally going to burn out

ill take a pic tomoro of the setup u need
