Hello all,

I have a Monco Kart with a 5 HP Briggs. When I got the kart the screw was broken off in the part that connects to the engine, making it impossible to tighten the cable, and cable was VERY loose, so I order the part from my local store, and install and and the throttle cable brakes!! ARG!

So I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what to use to replace it, can I just buy a brake cable off of a bike, or maybe just some thin stranded cable at the hardware store? Whats best and not hard to use? I have searched this site, but cant really find much, perhaps I'm not using the right key words...

BTW my cable goes from the pedal to the engine, no rod.

Thanks in advance.

Buy a good quality thottle cable, I have old footage of people killing them selfs racing at Martinsville speedway. It use to be a weekly thing for a cable to stick, and they were in a 750x750 box they would hit the wall. Please for your own safety don't risk it, you only have one life.

I get, ya, but this is for a 5hp kids kart, and I want to know whats best, whats available, and what I can make work. I still don't know what I should use, I really don't want to have to order it, it will take awhile to come in.

Bicycle brake cable is MORE than sufficient. If throttle sticking is a concern, set up a return spring on engine throttle, and pedal. Check cable operation periodically, and clean/lubricate as needed. Getting killed by a stuck throttle cable is not only completely avoidable, but is inexcusable for a racer. A racer should be all over the maintenance/safety concerns.

I said they were old tapes!!!! did anyone read that part. I was just saying the throttle/brakes are not something to skimp on.

Believe me, bicycle brake cable is not "skimping". Yes, I did notice the "old tapes". They must have been filmed before maintenance and safety were invented.

Brakes are a whole other matter.

Yup- Good ol' fashioned bicycle stuff- like what you might find on a 10 speed or mountain bike. Please note that bicycle shift cable could also work, but is thinner. While I still don't think this presents any kind of hazard, I like the brake cable. You can even get cool, modern stuff- cable that has a Teflon coating on it- now that's trick!

I strongly agree with the brake cable idea. Just think about it for a second, they use them n minibikes, go karts, some mowers, etc. Just make sure your not putting too much stress on the cable. I use them on every single one of my karts and the only time i had a problem was when i didn't think and slammed my pedal down without tuning the cable and it snapped. Trust me, if you look on an old throttle body on an old car, you will see basically the same exact cable-type as a brake cable on a bicycle.
