So im a newbie to putting together a go kart. The engine I bought has a throttle set up on it on the back of the engine (see pics below, im guessing it was used as a go kart engine before I got it) and my gas pedal looks like this. My question is whats the best way to rig all of this up? also, I have noticed on the hand controls that are on the side of the engine, the throttle lever is super hard to push from slow to fast. I was planning on using a return spring for the throttle but I dont think this is one strong enough thats small, to pull the cable back to the idle position. Is there something I need to disconnect so that the throttle cable will work smoothly with a normal return spring? and in the first pic, the wire to the left, does that need to be on a ground or is that for a kill switch?
thanks guys in advance, I can provide more pics if need be.

My best advice to you is to remove the throttle control plate & see what's behind it; where/how is everything connected? Once you do that you may find an easier way to connect the cable.

My guess is that your engine came off a lawn mower which is meant to have a stiff throttle.

As for the pedal connection: Go to your local bicycle shop & get a brake cable retainer bolt & attach it to the hole in your pedal.

To attach the cable to the bracket- you can get a cable adjuster barrel from a bicycle shop, and either drill and tap your bracket (like I do), tack-weld a nut to the bracket, or just make the hole a bit oversize and use nuts on both sides of the cable barrel to bold it in place. I like to make my own with a 1/4"-20 bolt of the crappy, ungraded variety, and drill a hole right down the middle and all the way through. Then, I use a 1/4" drill and make a recess in the head for the cable casing to sit in.

To attach to the pedal- get another crappy, hardware-store bolt (ungraded), maybe 1/4-20x1" or similar. Drill a small (1/16" or smaller) hole crossways through the bolt just below the head, as close as possible, leaving room for a washer. Assemble a washer onto the bolt, pass the cable through, followed by another washer and a nut. The cable will be clamped in place between the washers and held tight by the nut and the bolt head. Don't tighten this down yet. Install another washer, and place the assembly into the hole in the pedal, followed by another washer, and finally a lock nut. Now, gently pull the slack out of the cable (without moving the throttle assembly on the engine, and tighten down the nut against the cable while holding the bolt head with a wrench. Once that's done, snug up the lock nut that holds the assembly to the pedal. Leave this a bit slack, you want the whole assembly to be able to swivel.

There are actually several ways to do these things, mine are just some possible suggestions.

The age of this thread is 13 years and 9 months. Information is sometimes hard to come by, even back in 2012.

For a factory style go kart/minibike throttle for that Briggs & Stratton engine, and using the under-tank governed throttle assembly, use the 692316 Briggs and Stratton Throttle Control. It’s available from numerous suppliers.
