I've been offered a 500cc two smoke sled engine for $200. It comes with all the parts to run it, been converted to electric start, but has no pipes. How much of a pita is it to build tuned pipes?

I'm torn beween this and a box stock engine. With the box stock motor I'd repower my grasshopper, but with the sled engine I think I'd have to build a new cart. (Or try to repower my old red kart)

Well, making an expansion chamber may be a bit difficult but, you have everything else you need , that's a plus isn't it?

I can't acess that link; 403 forbidden...

If you go with the sled option, you will never be at a loss for power. They are beasts! You can probably pick up a used expansion chamber for your motor on a snowmobile site. Since you have the primary and secondary, you have the essential parts. They can be a pain to set up but when you're done, fun,. fun, fun!!! Plus, electric start means lights and accessories.

I clicked on the link and it took me right to it, may not let you because you are in AUS.

It is very tempting to use it, but for now I think I'll pick up a Predator in a couple weeks when they are on sale. Does anyone know much about them? I looked close and it appeared to have plastic fins on the flywheel. What's this "hemi" head? I've seen it referenced here and there, but I don't know if all the motors have it or not, and how does one know? The most I can find is an aftermarket head.

Original Predator is pre-june 2013? After is hemi head version? http://www.affordablegokarts.com/mm...e_Code=A&Product_Code=HG275&Category_Code=PNP

Yeah but I didn't know if the engines came with a hemi head, it looks like the newer ones do. I'm just wondering though, how to tell once I actually buy a predator. I mean it could concievably take 5 months to go from the factory to the store to my hands, if they don't sell many. I'm sure theres a date of manufacture on it or on the literature somewhere.

The BSP motor looks like a good deal, but I'm wondering how much power it makes, compared to starting with a bone stock Predator and building as I go along. I guess as long as I'm more competitive with it than my flatty I'd be happy.

I'm not absolutely certain that it will be as easy as breaking it down by date. They have been offered for a while now throught the country; but not in California. It has been assumed that it isn't smog legal there. On top of that, HF still shows 3 seperate PN's on thier site.
So, currently there are three models available, and 60636 may be prohibited in strict smog areas.

I take it you do not have a Harbor Freight locally to insure you buy a hemi head?

Oh I do, I was there today to buy a big crescent wrench to swap radiator fans on my Dakota, and decided to look over the motors while I was at it.

Been watching videos on youtube, one guy took his flywheel off for painting and I see that the fan is just a plastic piece and the flywheel itself is flat, so that answers that.

And then, there is this video… http://www.youtube.com/watch?featur...dEGoJbQJf3M_Xw4TVAtb0HuMb&v=tfc_hAzf5ow#t=271 I love the way this engine sounds and runs. I'll be watching more of his videos to see what exactly he put into it, both parts-wise and money-wise.

That's the same design as the original Honda. The pics below show 2 genuine honda flywheels

Yeah, I don't think there is any inherent problems with the plastic blades. Someone has them available with every other blade cut off. I don't think that would be safe with cast-in blades.

I cut about 1/4" off every blade (they were hitting a bolt or something) then painted it & the flywheel silver; looks awesome...

I'm collecting Predator 212 info and sticking it in this thread. Seems a lot of people use this motor, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of info on it here. After I get "enough" info, I'll make a new post that can be stickeyed if wanted.

Just some info on the Harbor Freight 212cc Predator engines...There are a couple "versions" on the market. First the originals, then they (China) made some "Hemi" style, (plug in center of valve cover), then pre-June 2013 with their original crank/cam, and now they have gone to a Honda spec. crank.
