Bootleg Arduinos are pretty cheap, especially the smaller ones. They're about $3.25 apiece shipped in quantities of five including a USB-to-TTL adapter for programming. I have a bunch of that stuff somewhere.
The Uno is good for learning and development while the Minis and Micros are smaller and easier to integrate into a finished project as the "brain."
