So I ride motorcycles and always wear my gear: textile jackets, boots, pants, helmet and gloves. I've got gear for all weather.
Last Thursday, my brother brought over a minibike. He recently put a 6.5HP clone engine on it. I decided to take it for a spin. I figured I'd look silly wearing all the gear on a tiny minibike, plus it was hot out. I was wearing shorts, a t-shirt and no shoes....
See where this is going?
The 6.5HP engine is too big for the little pit bike, and will shoot it out from underneath you at any speed if you crank the throttle too hard. Despite this, it was going really well, I had the throttle wide open and was going 25 MPH.
I got greedy.
In what can only be described as a fit of insanity, I took my left hand off the handlebars, reached between my legs and tweaked the governor arm. The bike wheelied out from underneath me. At 25 MPH. I mentioned the no-shoes, shorts and t-shirt thing, right?
When I stopped sliding along the pavement, I noticed there was a lot of blood. It felt like my arm was on fire (still does, actually). The bike was still running, and I was still pumped up with adrenaline and not feeling much pain yet, so I rode it home.
My brother, son and a friend were waiting in the driveway for me. I refused medical attention, but my brother did go to the local CVS to get gauze, topical antibiotics and wound wash.
I got the dirt out my wounds and have been slowly recovering ever since. I'm going to the doctor today to have my hand checked out because it's still swollen a little. I have chunks of flesh mising from my right foot, knee, thigh, hand, wrist and forearm. The left side of my body was not spared, but isn't as bad. I have a little rash on my left wrist, knee and elbow.
So take it from me, that cute little minibike can pose a lot of danger if you abuse it.....
