Can we use the word trans or transmission, I know there is going to be the word police out on force, but it just sounds better for this application...
As per your post, I don't believe there is any here who has completed( if what I believe you are referring to a tensioner trans) such a thing here yet.

Good grief, That term for trans. has been in use since the 50's or earlier. I remember when a odd personality was queer and a happy person was gay. Who decides these things?
If you could link us to the trans you are talking about on the home page, then we could help you out.

This type is meant to change gearing for different circumstances (uphill, gravel, beach rides etc.)

Yep that's the cross dresser , I mean tranny 
! Has anyone done it though I have seen 2 speed attempts, and dog clutches but that looks super low buck and kinda retro simple. Trany carb pumpkin I deal more with cars so have a gay day.

it really does look simple, but it also does look useless for everday use
I mean honestly, stopping the bike, unbolting a lever, resetting a belt to rebolt the lever at a different position just to change a gear?
That's not bad for 1954, but it's a PITA for 2013
So get a Torque Converter kit, and have that change gears automatically for you

And how many pain in the a$$ cobbled together karts have you seen why not just buy one? Aha and plus look at it this way, you could have a dual pulley instead for a speed and torque . Just saying it would be cool to see done .
I think you misunderstood..
I think the REASON why you don't see this set up very often, is because you can have a better alternative for about the same amount and much less hassle fabbing something.
I don't say no one should bother building it, I just do understand if noone bothers given the option he has nowadays

PS Oh and if you look closely, it's a "four speed" so two for torque and two for speed already

i think that could be made to shift on the fly pretty easily. just have a guide to keep the belt in one spot. pull a clutch leaver to release a bit of the belt tention and move a shift leaver to shift over the rack of pullys. you would have to build the bike around this huge overcomplicated contraption but it would work

I see what youre saying.... THAT would be a huge pita to undergo UNLESS you were going for "most unique" ....,
And, since it's a v-belt you would have to somehow pop the belt out of one grovve and get it in the next.

Sid, you would just use one or two idler pulleys to get the slack and clearance needed to move the drive pulley pack left or right. The belt always stays in the same plane. I think its actually pretty "do-able"....
That's not the point!
of course the belt will stay, but still you have to LIFT the belt above the pulley collars
(then move the pulleys) then lower the belt.
lifting the belt off the pulley over half of the circumference of the pulley is impossible with one idler, almost impossible with two and it's still hard to do with three.
because you can not just lift a portion and let it slip in the next pully.. that'll ruin the belt.
but again it might work shifting up (higher gear..smaller pulley) but it'll be quite a task to shift down in a larger pulley.

better idea would be 3 seperate belts with 3 seperate tentioners.

Wow thats cool. Now your talking 3 speed.
There is going to be a high slip on those belts though, most likely the 2 and 3gears. Also takes up a fare amount of space too, for all the linkages and such.

Just wanted to see it done by some one . I would rob a varies peer pulley on a mower if i was gonna do my own
