Hello I am Bryan And This is how it starts..
So I finally dragged the 5 hp kart out of my shop and brought it home.

The back story is long winded but- my uncle had it probably more then ten years ago. He has no kids but let neighborhood rug rats run it. At some point he gave it to my brother when his kids were pretty young (maybe 5-10 yr old). They used it a few years but then it fell into disrepair so it wound up sitting at our shop. It almost seemed forgotten about other then when it was in the way.
My two are turning 9 and 6 this summer so.... I figure I should commandeer it and breathe some life into it. Some toys just need to be played with.
After a quick carb cleaning it does run, albeit rough.
Needs tires
Need to change the brakes to something better. As a kid I had a kart with a band brake and that is a dream over this metal pad on one tire setup.
Needs more then I know, of that I am sure.
Clutch questions, body questions, safety questions and more is why I joined up here. Seems like a good group here and a wealth of info, A valuable resource without a doubt.
I am too big for this kart but I am willing to put some effort and a few $ to give my kids a chance at experiencing some of the fun I remember.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I don't want to start a cluster of threads over this kart in every section so I would rather ask here and if something else is preferred just let me know to go elsewhere.

I spent a little time in the garage trying to figure this out. I am not the most mechanically inclined person but I'd like to believe I am not a total MORAN..
I understand the idea behind the centrifugal clutch but don't get why this one isn't working correctly. I have the wheels in the air. I start the engine and the tires begin to spin. I figure the clutch is gunked up and making contact so I shut down and pull it off. Things look like this

Only markings are the # 8 in lower right and max something at the top. Is this a marking for max torque? And if so what does that tell me?

I removed the retainer clip and pulled the clutch apart, kinda dirty but everything moves separately from the outer housing. I put it back together with some oil on the shaft.

The key is that bit on the left side notice the indents from the set screw? This key had alot of play in the keyway, its much tighter if I rotate it 90 degrees when reinstalling the clutch on the shaft.

This has me concerned, and sort of reinforces the thought the the key was installed wrong at some point. Will that bit of play or slop allow the clutch to wobble? Any thoughts?

I put the clutch back on and and fired it back up. At first it seemed like success. The engine was running and the wheels weren't spinning. I gave it some gas and the clutch engaged like I think it should, then I used the "brakes" to slow it down. Something happened because the clutch made a pretty good racket and I stalled it out. That would tell me the clutch isn't disengaging correctly. A restart proved that the clutch is in fact engaged again. Is this a case of taking it off and use dry lube inside or what? Any thoughts or recommendations?
And also this thing shakes and wobble like a somof-a-b

Ok We would rather you not start a whole cluster of Threads, So your good there.
Yes that is a "max torque" brand clutch the 8 probably means very little.
The engine keyway has been worn probably a loose clutch.
You can get a new key at any hardware store 3/16".
If it will fit, get as long as possible to get some of it out of the bad spot.
Are you using a bolt and washer in the end of the crank to hold the clutch on? you should.

Hard to tell as far as performance what it is doing. Are you doing all this in the air, or is the kart on the ground. On the ground may make a difference, just due to the resistance.

All that aside you can get a new clutch on ebay for like 25 bucks.

It's in the air.
I thought the same thing that the tires might spin a little but I expected when I hit the brake that it would slow the tire, not stop the engine.
Looks like I'll be doing some shopping this week.
I really am trying to read up on things here so as not to be a PIA asking repeat questions, but I've got a lot of catching up to do

Local morning radio guys used that clip for the longest time whenever there was a fire reported. Pretty funny to hear how many times Sweet Brown had witnessed a fire, occasionally multiple times a day.

Hey, thanks for posting the photos of this oddball kart, or what it looks like without the body kit. I've seen one just like it with the extended "outriggers" left and right and an extended bumper. Has the same butterfly steering wheel too.
