As Ive ground the spot welds flush, I been hittin them with some cheap spray paint... after about emptying the can I wondered if there was any benefit... just gona sand it off when I go to weld the floor in...

Only benefit is you are in wet PA. in Winter. So your paint will prevent it from Rusting. Which I have seen happen in a matter of days. So yeah its cant hurt.

Along the same lines... what does anybody know about weld over primers?

At any rate... this is my plan for the rocker panel.
Red is what I have that is still solid, the rusted crap will be cut of ofcourse. Grey is what I want to do with some 1/8in material.

I somehow managed to tweak the body so the passenger door will not close without hitting the visor where it goes around the gutter.


Came to the conclusion I wont be able to get the back floor in one piece... Instead Ill use 3 pieces. Butt welding these pieces would suck. A flange would make for easy plug welds.

The down side I see is 2 pieces of metal sandwiched together, is a place for moisture... thats not good. So my thought was to apply some sort of sealer before welding?

Also thinking about how to form that flange. I know there are air tools, and hand tools, but they only do a small portion at a time. Even if there were lines to follow, I think the result could become wavy?

What are we looking at?

Is the head an "0331" casting? Or does it say "tupy"?
The "0331" had a thin cast between the exhaust ports between 3&4. Prone to cracking.
The "tupy" is a recast where they fixed the problem.

This terd is a 96. Casting number on this was 0631 or something like that.
Wasnt the bum castings years 00-01 or so?

I was fortunate enough to get a bunk head in my 99wj.

Im going to clean up this head, and if the crank isnt buggard up, save the whole engine for a possible rebuild.

Also looking into the possibility to drop in a Mercedes diesel engine.
Far from a 4bt Cummins, but still would be fun.

While you have the engine apart. Find a crank from an older I6, the 4.2 and put it in the newer block. The newer head has better flow and the old crank has lots of stroke.
I think it makes a 4.6 stroker. You can over size the Pistons and a few other things to get up to 4.8 or so but it takes a lot of work to get there. Just the crank swap does quite a bit.

There's a guy that wheels with us who has an LSXJ.
You should see the work it took to cram that in there.

If I can find one, thats certainly an option. At the moment, Im limited to junk yard jewels. I do plan on getting a newer intake.
I found a guy who put a slightly modified 99+ intake on a 93, dynoed before and after and gained nearly 30hp and 20ft lbs tq. However there is an article about various mods for these and they only got I think +5hp.
I have a Grand Cherokee to experiment with at any rate...

Ive seen some of these jeep with a cowl hood scoop, I think the raised side would be a most excellent place for a "4.6 STROKER" sticker.

If this wasnt such a piece of garbage to begin with, I would have gotten a cheap 318 5 speed Ram or Dakota parts truck for a swap.

I'd love to get my hands on a 98 zj. For one year only they had a 5.9 option. It's easy to identify, they put hood cowls from the factory.
I've seen vids of them smoking all 4 on the pavement.

The front of my GC has to rust issues, I thought since I have a spare I might put a scoop on the bad one for fun.
That would be fun to have something capable of roasting all 4 tires at once... but Id be happy with roasting 2...

Theres a guy on Cherokeeforum that did the scoop on his xj. The finished product is very nice.

I dont think Id put all the effort he had into his... think Id just make it look strait and smooth and slap a few coats of primer on it and call it done.

But for me, that will all have to wait till I can get a more suitable welder.
Id hate to try and do that with stick.


As for the welder, Ill probably just get Lincolns most basic unit that can run solid and flux core wire. Somewheres around $350 new. Gona look in the used market first ofcourse. Maybe snag something for 200-250 would be great...

Well I got some tires... They look like they are older than I am, but they are not all cracked and have good (enough) tread.

Flanger air tools work pretty good...they need a straight edge to follow.. But they do take a bit to do a complete edge...
