Speaking of american engines, I just got a OLD briggs and stratton 10hp or 12hp or 16hp cast iron briggs horizontal. Its on an old beefy lawn tractor. I got it for 10$. Score. I had it running and its a beast. Its a single cylinder, but it has a HUGE stroke. I could out tourqe any 13hp clone at an idle. It just weighs a ton. I got to get a vid of the thing running and pulling when I fix the clutch.

What's the EPA got to do with it?

It is a bit of a drag that you've lots a good, cheap source for true clones (because I don't think the Predator series is a true clone), they're still widely available elsewhere.

which is good, and the EPA is demanding they change the clones to much with the air filter and muffler and ****, so lifan probablly just stopped changing them and thats how we get preadtor engines

I don't think the EPA has anything to do with it. The Honda GX's are still the same, so are many, many other clones that have no problem meeting EPA standards.

It's more likely that HF liked the new Predator engines and just decided to buy them instead.

I got upset once a year or so ago because Princes Auto discontinued the 6.5 clone they sell. Only a month or two later they brought in new ones. The stock # changed, but that's about it. I suspect they changed suppliers.

Take off the stock exhaust, put on a k&n or other style air filter, and it won't look bad at all. But I do agree, the new plastic isn't pretty.

i mean it would look good, but as good as the normal clone, when you looked at a clone your like, yeah thats metal and aftermarket air filter and header if i had a predator engine itd be like yeah, thats the peice of **** over there

i agree 100%

a usa/japan/australian/german/italian/english engine may cost abit more but over time you will save money.

- i run industrial spec engines all day every day and can tel you the chinese stuff isn't worth it. They are so tempting because of the price but if you cant afford a quality new engine i think you're better off buying secondhand. I have brigs and victa engines with 000's of hours on them. Well worth the extra $

Availability can be an issue too. I went fzzzing mental trying to nail down a used Briggs 5hp flatty nearby, in decent shape and reasonably priced. Didn't happen.
