Teenager gets go-kart for good grades

Just introduced myself in the Introduction thread. Bought this buggy from my neighbor for $75 to reward my boys (ages 13 and 9) for good grades in school. Both have shown an interest in tools and fixing things. I have moderate experience, I own two antique fire trucks.

Just not sure where to get parts, help etc. engine doesnt run. someone dismantled the original parts, so need to go over steering and brakes.

The "thing" on the front is part of a snowmobile engine cover that my neighbor thought would be a good cover. It is not original to the kart. Would love to find out what the original model was.

Welcome! That is a nice looking kart. The engine doesn't look so familiar to me. Its a Yamaha, but not one I have seen before

That's interesting! Pretty good chance it's homebuilt. The engine looks like it was either designed for a snowblower, or even a snowmobile. See this big D-shaped pullstart handle? Designed to be easy to grasp with snowmobile mitts on your hands. I wonder if it's a 2-stroke...

Get us some good pics of the engine, close up from various angles, please!

Sounds like a plan. The engine ran at one time and it turns over when you pull the starter cord. I have the carb that came in a box. I have the gas tank from my old tractor that I gave to him and it came back with the Kart. I have a month before I start actually working on it (as mentioned - I told my kids that this is an early gift and that right now ALL we have is a go kart frame.) If grades go bad, so does the deal. I really hope they do well because I want to get it running!

In the meantime, I am going to come up with a list of things I need and I will be popping in here. There is a caliper on the rear axle already for brakes, so I probably just need to measure the thickness and figure out what will fit for brakes. The steering was homemade by a kid but I have the original steering rods that I am going to try and get back on. Looking forward to my new project!
