hi guy's
i have this tecumsuh 2.50 horizontal shaft engine i am working on and it is not getting spark.

when i spin the fly wheel and hold on to the spark plug wire it gives me a small jolt but i guess it not enough to spark the plug.

also as weak as it is i think it is also intermitant.

i have put on a new condensor but it is half the size of the original ..it has the same numbers except it has a b at the end of the number instead of an a ..

it also produces a small jolt when i hold on the the spark plug wire.

the points looks good and the flywheel and pin look good..

i was hoping someone had suggestions on what to look at next ..

thanks

You always clean and gap the points, ALWAYS. Always like you you always clear a gun when you pick it up, even if somebody else just did. ALWAYS

remember though, if you were just spinning it slowly, engines make a more powerful spark the faster they spin (to a point) because the magnet is flying past the coil and it generated a more powerful spark. I've seen some engines make no spark at all when spinning the flywheel, and then when you really yank the cord, it makes a great spark. Just my 2 cents

Correctly operating Tecumseh coil (with points) should knock you on your *** by just rocking flywheel back and forth.
Some (emphasis on some) of the newer CDI's (breakerless) require a minimum RPM to 'turn on'.

i have checked the points and they are in good condition and gapped correctly..

i am only getting a very mild intermittant shock when i hold onto the plug wire ..

also this is prollie a 1980 year engine..

thanks

Did you clean them? Match book strikers work very well. They can look good but may have layer of corrosion/glazing that would increase resistance and produce weak or no spark.
Check with multimeter or battery operated test light across points.

i took a break (cause i was getting pissed) and came back to it with a fingernail file and some either ..it just about knocked me on my ***..

it actually started for a second but i believe it is flooding out.

i will remove the carb and clean it up..

it is the floatless type ..

what would make it bleed out gas ??

and thanks very much for all your comments..

I'm assuming you have a diaphragm carb.
Most likely cause is bad diaphragm.
Could also be stuck or leaky needle which should be replaced if rubber (viton) tipped. This viton tends to deteriorate because of alcohol in gasoline and will cause uncontrolled fuel flow.
Rebuild kits are cheap and should solve all problems.
