New to small engines and go karts. got one for my kid with a Tecumseh power sport 6hp bought a new carb and installed it. it starts up and idles but eventually shuts down. its different each time i start it. One time it idled up when giving it throttle, the other times it just bogs down. Not sure what i should be doing or what the next step would be.

Were new gaskets supplied with the carb? Sounds like a vacuum leak at the intake. Is the air filter in good shape? If there is a mixture screw with that carb see if you can adjust the air/fuel mixture with the engine warm.

the aftermarket carbs are so picky for that engine, the best bet is to buy a carb that isnt for that engine but for the cc\hp, i have 2 of those engines and learned its smartest to rebuild the old carb or buy one for a different engine, the engines itself are amazing tho, im unsure if your model has the oil sensor but if it does, unplug it, if you dont every time you take a turn the oil will slosh away from the sensor and cause the engine to turn off. Good luck on your adventure!

the factory carb on these sucks, the aftermarket ones are worse. they are just all wrong, fixed emissions jetting that is too lean, and can't be adjusted.

you might be able to use the snowblower carb that is adjustable, i didn't try it but it might work. it looks really close.

I switched mine to a PZ19 clone carb and it runs great with a 78 jet. Drill the holes in the manifold out a fuzz bigger and it goes right on.

The big dumb muffler gets in the way so i had to make a new muffler out of junk i had laying around, but you might be able to buy something that would work.

i had used a muffler from a b&s 900 series and removed the heat guard and bolted it on, it might look a little funny tho, it sticks up and leans to one side a little bit like a smoke stack on a semi but it got the job done, the carb i used for a while was also off of the 900 series but later replaced with a dirtbike carb then to a cheap evil bay carb for some other engine

Back in the day before 15 dollar carbs from china was a thing, these were my go-to carb for any 5hp ish briggs type application. Whenever i saw them on a scrap snowblower i would nab them. They have a high and low speed jetting adjustment so they are very very easy to make run on just about anything from 3-10 hp. I don't know for sure they go on the OHV engine, but chances pretty good they are close.

The PZ 19 is 6mm bolts on a 48 mm spacing and i had to widen the holes a bit to make it work, so chances are pretty good the 46mm spacing on that tecumseh carb would be perfect.

I would bet you can cobble the throttle linkage and make this work, take some steel wire and pliers and bend a new rod to go to the governor arm, the old spring ought to work, and now you can tune it to run properly.

Thats only if you're concerned about keeping the stock throttle/governor mechanism. When i went to the PZ19 i just used a regular bicycle cable to hook up the throttle. I personally find that a lot easier than messing with governor linkages. The governor shaft going through the block on my Tecumseh was all goofed up, so it was a lot easier for me to just ditch it all.

Here is the post showing the carb and briggs 'sausage muffler' welded up with a piece of black pipe and a homemade flange.
