Tecumseh - No Idle

Bought this 5hp Tec and it's off a shredder/mulcher. It starts right up, but doesn't idle. Is this engine made to only run full throttle? The idle adjustment does nothing and when I pull the butterfly/governor to close it, it dies.
Any ideas?

It says Tecumseh right on it, of course it will not idle.

Tecumsehs are fine, they just have some of the most sensitive (and possibly crappy) carburetors on the planet!

Actually BBQ Joe is partially correct. All of these industrial engines were designed to run at full throttle to do the jobs they were designed to do. Actually the factory standard of 3600 RPM (governed speed) was set and the machinery was designed around that standard more or less.

Your engine should idle though.

Your carburetor needs cleaning and inspection.

Lets see a pic that shows how the clips and springs and stuff are connected to the carb.

Show me your linkage.

First thing I would do is pull those 2 screws off the back and make sure the throttle shaft isn't bent open or somebody drilled bigger holes on it.

That would cause a high idle also.

You can see the linkage in my first picture. Nothing special going on there.
I did have the carb apart and cleaned it. Everything looked copacetic.

No I can't. I see ONE clip going to the carb that probably comes form somewhere.

The fact that you need to Pull the butterfly to close the carb intsead of pulling it to open it tells me it needs some kind of return spring. If you need it to idle unless giving it gas, the throttle will have to be a "normally closed" set up.

The fact that it dies when you close the throttle tells me there are still dirty or clogged holes inside your carb.

How did you clean it? I found a stripped bread tie works well.
Maybe a strand of wire from a wire brush?

It might be too rich, I had a different problem with my predator 212. Luckily, I fixed it by stretching the gov spring, looks like you should (unstretch?) your spring.
