First question: Is the 5hp engine also a Tecumseh?

IIRC, tha 8hp carb is physically bigger than the 5hp equivelant & I'm not sure anyone has tried it; I suppose the only way to truly find out is to try it...

And they make good paperweights anyway.......sorry....couldn't help myself.....

Someone hide me.....I think I hear Russ coming......:lolgoku:

Russ might be behind, but it's okay, I'm here. Go ahead and hide. I get along with those Tec carbs just fine.

You have a couple things to examine. The first is the mounting flange. is it a direct bolt-up? hole spacing the same? Port line up ok? Does the carb actually sit level?

The second thing to examine is the venturi size. There IS such thing as too much carb. If the venturi is too large, it'll fall flat on its face. You lose intake velocity. Check them out.

Jetting is a relatively minor concern. If you have one of those lovely Series One carbs (Pre-EPA, adjustable main and pilot jets, you're golden. A little tuning and you're off. If you don't, you may be into either ordering new jet(s), or fillin' and drillin'. It's actually not a particularly difficult task with the right tools and a bit of practice.

My very first question when I hear somebody asking about carb swaps... "Why?" Is your carb physically broken or damaged? 99% of the time, rebuilding is an option that folks fail to examine. If re-jetting is the concern (which is the sense I get from you), you're going to be doing it anyways... Might as well use what you got.

my original 5 hp carb was non adjustable; I ordered a non epa 8 hp carb with adjustable main and pilot jets. It should, in theory, bolt right up. I figure I'm better off with adjustable jets than having to do multiple rejets as more is done to the engine.
