Hi,
Its a well used engine but had good compression when I got it a few weeks ago. I replaced the carb with a Chinese knockoff. In the process I also replaced the fuel line and installed a fuel filter. The thing has been running great.
Today was running good for 30 minutes or so, then as my son drove by me I heard it sputtering, like it was about to run out of gas. Stopped the kart, plenty of gas, starts right up, idols fine, goes about 50 feet and more sputtering.
Tried it without the gas cap, no help.
Took off the air filter, no help.
Pulled the plug, looks good (tho its the one it came with).
I Let it cool down, no help.
Took the belt off, no load, didn't sputter, but still didn't sound right.

I couldn't even limp home, seemed to get worse, tried to hold it at 1/4 throttle and would end up cutting out on me.

I'll grab a new plug tomorrow (champion okay?), but what else should I be considering?

Thanks

Did this originally have a primer bulb carb or a choke? What did you replace it with? I like to replace the primer bulb carbs with a carb with a choke and both adjustment screws.

It did have the red bulb. And does now too, I didn't want to mess up the linkage or anything, so its a clone of the original.
Tho I wish I had adjusting screws and a choke too!

Sooooo, I think I'm supposed to have an RN4C Champion plug in there.
The plug I pulled just now is a RC12YC ?!?
The two don't cross reference.
That's probably not good.
Right?

This may sound dumb.. but since I don't know what engine you're talking about, and what you did to it already...

is it possible, that your low oil sensor is still attached, if so...
it's quite possible that it triggers as soon as you accelerate and shuts down the ignition..
when the kart then looses acceleration of course the oil level is seen as correct and the ignition is firing again.

So in case you have a low oil sensor on your engine, remove it's lead and isolate it against ground (so it cannot short by accident)

Right?

It's an older OHH-60
no fancy oil sensor that I know of

OK
I'll unbolt the motor and see if I have some wiring under there that is shorting out.
That's where it would be, right?

yes it's under the engine, but the wires go to the ignition coil;
so the easiest thing to do is unplug it there to test ;)

Got the spark plug today, the RIGHT ONE!!
I didn't know that you could run an engine with the wrong spark plug?!?
Hope it didn't hurt the engine much
Didn't help with the sputtering at all.

Dumb?
Yep, sounds like a dumb answer all right seeing how I don't have an oil sensor....

..but oh my, Oh MY, it was not dumb!!
ItSid, you were so close/right on target, scary!!
You had me chasing down the kill wire and sure as S*** !
You were so right!
It was pinched between the crank case, and the housing.
The wire was worn just barley through, just one strand exposed, shorting it out ..like you thought, basicly!

If I was running things around here!?! I'd give you Senior Member status!
😀😁😂😃

Thank you very much!
Kart running strong
