Hi i am building a go kart around a new honda gx620 what would be the best clutch for this hp

well i heard they where rated up to 25hp. but that might only be for 2 stroke. but the 40 series should still work.

even the 40 series are only rated to 18 hp whats the worst that can happen if its 2 hp over the recomendation

yeah those are only safety ratings. like when a trampoline says not to go over 250lb. yet you can and nothing happens. so i guess 2hp over shouldn't hurt anything,but if you can find a clutch or TC that is rated to that much i would rather u go with that.

I believe Blaz noted that the Comet 40/44 series can take up to 25hp, although, they are listed as good up to 18, we'll need Blaz to shed some light here. Additionally, the 40/44 is much more common than the 500 series, not to mention that the 500 is about 2x the price of a 40/44 series. Lastly, the driver for the 500 only comes in 3/4" bore, that motor is almost guaranteed to 1" PTO.

I would be careful. These clutches are rated to a certain HP because they will not function properly over the rated HP. They will eat expensive belts like they're nothing. Before you toss out $300+, research the topic. The 500 series will only come in a driver bore off 3/4". For the cost of a TC, it may make more sense to sell the GX620, save the money one the TC, and get a bike/quad style engine which will rev higher and also provide a gearbox.

Nothing against you B man (I don't know your background), but you are new here and some of your info seems less than up to par with me. I just don't want him taking the first thing he reads as well accepted fact, due to his own ignorance, and waste a large sum of money.

I'm not sure why they are rated differently for 2 and 4 strokes, but with a 4 stroke, like your GX 620, the 40/44 series says 18 HP. Blaz will be able to enlighten us as I'm sure he knows the limits of a 40/44 series TC.

Well its like i said. 2hp over i don't think is too much and that i would rather him find a Tc or clutch that is rated for that much. i agree it may go through belts faster.

Everything I've read from their demonstrations to dealers shows they can handle amazing horsepower, 25 is what we saw over and over. Its a very strong assembly and would easily trust it up to and past that point.

Thanks Redsox i am going to keep researching to find a bigger tc i was'nt keen to use the 40series comet either. A motor bike engine is a good idea but i am building a kart that has a rear swing platform so setting up a shifter would be hard

good for 25hp on a 2 smoker...

now im not sure how it works but...

40 Series: driver
Clutch Engagement: Minimum 1600 RPM, Maximum 3100 RPM
Requires a crankshaft with a 1/4" keyway and tapped end.

the 40 series is good for 18HP on a 4 puffer...
which actualy makes it stronger than the 500 series rated for only 16 on 4 cyl

I would suspect the 40 series is good for around 27-29hp on 2 cycle...

or at least thats what i would presume... anyone have thoughts on my logic??

i suspect the 40 series will be perfectly fine myself... for half the cost..

at any rate, you need to keep in mind the shaft sizes and all that jazz as well..

I'm kind of under the impression that the HP ratings of these units is a loose ballpark, a range of average applications. To illustrate my point, imagine a GX340 with a comet 40 on a vehicle with 24" tires, geared at 4:1. The CVT is rated at 18hp, we're only providing 11. But with those tall tires and high ratio, I can imagine that thing smoking belts like you wouldn't believe. Now imagine the GX620 and Comet 40, this time on a kart geared at 6:1 with 16" tires. The engine wouldn't break a sweat, and I'm reasonably sure the belt would be a lot happier.

To summarize, I think the load factors into things quite a bit, and personally, I would confidently put a Comet 40 on a GX620 provided that the gear ratio is reasonable.

The 500 only comes in 3/4" driver bore, so that's ruled out. And HOLY TORQUE that will be a sick set up if you gear it like that one in the link.
