Tc backing plate

Just wondered if it is ok to cut into a torque converter sheet galvinised backplate so a chain or belt can fit through?

in your other thread, looking at the pictures, cutting that bit of steel off would remove some strength, but if it would remove enough strength to cause problems, i can't be sure. IIRC the stamped steel back plates bent commonly, that's why comet switched to the cast ones.

before you go cutting stuff, try to install all the parts of the tc or anything near it (exuahst, pulley to go on js, etc). i'm worried the belt might not allow enough clearance between the back plate and tc. maybe you should try mounting the back plate differently so the belt, or chain can fit through the spot the chain is supposed to. could you eliminate the js and flip the rear wheel around so you can run a chain right from the tc to the rear sprocket?

Personally, I wouldn't do that unless you can come up with a good way to reinforce it around the cut out. The structural integrity of that plate is the only thing standing between you, and a million tossed chains.

Ok I will have a look. I cannot mount it any other way without drilling new holes
Maybe I could mount the pulley the other side of the driven and use no cover on the tc.
There is enough room for a belt if I remove ome washer.
The only problem is the pulley needs tensioning because it is only about 1.5"

as i said before, if you have a sprocket on the other side of your wheel, just flip the wheel around and run a chain from the tc to the wheel.

Any other ideas of how I could do this without buying too many things.
I do not want to go and buy a chain and a wheel for chain, because it is expensive and I spent hours of my time learning to use a lathe making those pulleys.

I saw that pic somewhere else. I may do this, but I am not sure whether my jackshaft pulley will line up. I will have to see tomorrow or monday.
Could I just remove the spacer from the driver so I can shift the driven across to make room for the pulley on the other side?

Ok that wont work. Shoulda bought a centrifugal clutch... yeah right!
Any other suggestions- I cannot think how to set it up.

Argh! Should have bought a cast one cos they have clearance.

why not use sprockets and chain?

Cos I spent hours making the pulleys and I am not getting rid of them now. I would also need a new back wheel and it would cost more than its worth.
I gave myself £50 for this bike. Spent a lot more than that.
Also belts are fairly efficient when tensioned.
I could consider a chain to the jackshaft, but #40 sprockets are pricey in the UK.

as i said before, you could cut the back plate, but doing so will decrease its structural integrity, to what degree i do not know. maybe cut the back plate, then weld some flat bar strips on the back to give it back its strength?

I would do but where can you buy them from? I almost bought one with a cast backplate, but it was a little more money

I would just cut whatever you need off of the pulley side, and weld on reinforcements on the engine side. You can always weld or bolt on a support bracket from the driven side to the kart frame.
