strangely, i just found out you can adjust the shift points on the comet TAV systems... something about changing the spring tension by using holes #1-3, anyone know how to do this properly? i cant find good directions on it.

Remove the retainer clip on the driven, be careful its spring loaded and liable to fly in your face! Adjust to whatever hole you want, wind it back up and put it back together. Im pretty sure thi higher the number the faster it shifts.

i was able to dig this up:

http://www.gopowersports.com/Comet/30series.pdf

if you go to the bottom of the last page on the right, it says a little bit about adjustment. i just didnt know HOW to take it apart correctly.

http://www.gokartsupply.com/asymapp.htm

if you scroll down on this page to where it shows the green tension spring, it talks about the holes. mine is in hole #1 and im going to try to move it to hole #3 because i do mostly drive on uneven terrain and hills. from what im reading, this wont effect your top speed or anything, just maybe take it a little longer to get there, but you will have more power to climb hills and whatnot, which would give your clutch a little bit of a break.

I have experience with CVT"s in drag racing and the tighter the spring, The later the secondary will open up so it wont bog down in the big hills.

Hmm... on my black manco kart, it seems to take too long before it starts advancing the belt. Engine revs right up to the governed speed, then hangs for about 2 seconds before the belt starts pinching up.

It will spool up in to to high of a gear and wont climb a hill, when I got my cart it was set at 1, wouldn't climb the 45* 6 foot deep drainage ditch at the corner of my yard without slipping and overheating. In position 2 it will climb said hill but the belt jumps a few times before it locks up and pulls. Have not yet tried number 3.

well, my problem seems to be getting the driven pulley off. the bolt that hold it on (big one in the center) seems to be stuck... its not a reverse thread is it?

also, i finally got a reply back from comet about the procedure:

SETTING SPRING PRELOAD:

Instructions on disassembly & reassembly of a symmetrical & asymmetrical torque converter system. (20 , 30 &40 Series)

Remove the driven unit from the machine and lay it flat on a work area.

DISASSEMBLE:

1) With the spring facing up, remove the retaining ring from the end of the post (Caution: this spring should be under pressure)

2) Lift up the fixed cam (the one with the three holes and spring), 40 series only one

3) Inspect the insert buttons, (one on each side of the moveable cam)
If worn or missing, replace all 6 buttons, 40 series only 3 Use a pair of pliers to remove any remaining buttons and press in new ones.

REASSEMBLE:

1) Insert the spring tang in the number one hole of the fixed cam, place the spring and cam down over the post of the fixed post and only push the fixed cam down about ¼” at this time. (Do not push it down all the way)

2) Rotate the movable face (the part that contains the buttons) 120 degrees, 1/3 of a turn counter clockwise if it has a blue or red spring, clockwise if it has a green spring.

3) Once rotated, hold in the moveable face so it doesn’t back off, push he fixed cam down all the way and replace the retaining ring.

4) Return the driven unit to the jackshaft.
