Hi,

I just picked up a go kart frame today. I have this grand idea of building a go-kart for my son for Christmas. The name on the side says "Mini Viper 110cc". It looks similar to others I have seen on the net (Kandi, Mini Trailmaster, etc). I grabbed pics from a site with one that looks identical (down to the pedals). I'm assuming a bunch of these Chinese karts are just named differently.

My mechanical experience is on the limited side, but I like to learn and this will be fun. I am wondering if anyone has taken one of these type of karts and put a larger engine on it, or knows if I will be able to easily put it on. I'm looking to add the Predator 212.

Thanks,

David

That engine is a variant of the Honda ct70 engine just a Chinese copy of it. Parts are super plentiful and cheap to buy. You can even get stroker cranks and jugs to bring that up to 155cc. My advice is to figure out what is wrong with it and fix it. The guys over at Lil-Honda.com are very knowledgeable and will help you out in many ways, maintenance, oil changes, cleaning the spinner oil filter and repairs all you have to do is sign up and ask questions. Good luck!

Thanks for the responses. The engine didn't come with it, just the frame. I can reach out to the guy to see if he still has the engine.

Also, the link you gave didn't come up. Is the link without the hyphen the site you were referring to?

One other thing. Being that this is for my 6 yo, he won't be ready for a manual. This kart has a shifter and the guy said that it wasn't an automatic. So if that's not something that can be converted I would probably need to change the engine anyway.

I don't like the idea of losing the electric start though.

Ok, crystal clear then...

Since is not a light frame, I'll go with a Predator 212cc with a torque converter and gear it near 6:1 (10-12T and 60T)...but I'm not the real expert...let see what the real masters say...

Remote kill switch will work fine without electric start, you'll just need a battery to power it.

Fodio got the link right, sorry I'm not good with this computer stuff yet. :mad2: If you look around you can buy a brand new engine with carb, electronics complete for under $500.00 140cc with auto clutch. Those guys can direct you better than I can since I have been away from those types of bikes for over 30 years.

Thanks for the response BirdFanatic.

If it's similar to the one in the pics, that particular one is 6.2hp, but more importantly, the engine didn't come with it. Also, my son is 6 and it was a manual. He's not ready for that just yet.

the 110cc prob puts out about 10hp why trade it for a 6.5hp engine

I bought a Chinese buggy with no engine that originally came with a gy6 in it. I am converting it to a gx390 clone made by greyhound. It will still have electric start but not reverse.

I don't know about yours but the one I bought has a small sprocket that uses like a 530 chain, and its location is in a less than ideal location on the axle. I am having to make a sprocket for the axle and add a jackshaft. I am using a comet 40 series to go to the jackshaft and then regular kart gear and chain to the axle.

It is going to take a bit of work, but I think the clone engine will be a more reliable setup in the long run. There are also plenty of upgrades out there to get that motor well over the 13hp it is rated at. comet makes an add on reverse if I decide that is a big deal.

Your conversion will be easier than mine since your sprocket is already mounted on the axle in a decent location. Mine is way over on the right along with the brake assembly. I would consider a predator 420 for it if it was me. Then you have more power and electric start.

Thanks for the response. Power is not so much an issue at the moment as it's for my 6 year old. I want something he can grow into and is faster than my zero turn right now (he loves riding on it, max about 12mph), but he won't go crazy on it.

My main concern is being able to get it to fit without issue. Of course, it sounds like you are going larger than the stock engine and can get it to work. So hopefully I can do the same.

:oops:Predator 212 is not a good option if you want to keep all the electircal parts (turn & brake lights)

You will need a clone able to producem12volts.

Hey Masters, any suggestion for a clone engine with coils able to handle some lights?

I'm not concerned with the turn and brake lights. We have 5 acres so he won't be on the road. Though, if I can hook up a remote kill switch to the battery can't I hook the lights up too?

Use that engine, and your back to having e start and lights. It's not hard to put the engine on there. Some people like to make things difficult, and question everything.... The 110 only puts it in the 6hp range..... All of them.... The 125's go up to around 8-9hp..... Typically
I'd buy the 7hp duramax that ml. Linked, and a TC...... Then gear it for 9:1-10:1...... He will have power out the wazoo and a top speed around the same as your lawn tractor....
Installing the engine won't be that difficult either.... Weld in a mounting plate with holes/slots....
