Hello everyone, I am going to build a fully suspended kart but I want to keep it as small as possible. I like the idea of using the Jackshaft as a swivel point but I feel it would make the kart longer than just suspending the engine and axle together.

I am somewhat of an amateur here and was wondering can this Jacks haft design be as compact as the other?

I'm not looking for the most performance just a very small but some what capable yard kart.

You don't need to use the jackshaft for the swivel point, just the center.

That doesn't make the kart longer. A separate swivel rear end does. Either way is doable.

BTW: I am somewhat of a male. You ARE an amateur! Please do not misuse the English language, an amateur is someone who does not make money in a particular area for a living.

The term you are looking for is uninformed.

Or...." I am not very knowledgeable in this area."

I would only use the jackshaft as a swing arm pivot point if the engine was mounted to the frame otherwise just mount the engine and jackshaft to the swing arm.

If I had an engine mounted to the frame with a torque convertor going to a swing arm I might try to have the driven axle inline with the swing arm pivot points just to get rid of having to have a chain tensioner.

Actually a definition for amateur is " : one lacking in experience and competence in an art or science <The people running that company are a bunch of amateurs.> <He's a mere amateur when it comes to cooking.> Which if used in this form, he would be correct... English teacher!

We are actually very helpful. You just have to be patient with our off-track posts sometimes:). And, Poboy did actually talk about your question in his post.

And apparently, I was wrong anyway! Oops!

Edit: that's what I get for taking people at their word!!!!

F_ingWizard is WRONG!!! I just Googled it, and it's EXACTLY what I said! So he can take a flying f_ing leap.

The guy didn't say crap until HE did, then he left.

Sometimes forums remind me of my job..........at the psych hospital.
reminds me of a guy that was trying to argue with me over how there is no use for flys.

I wasn't trying to. People have been misusing that word forever.

Some folks are one post wonders anyway. They just want an answer to one question, then they leave after they get it. Or before, if it's not the answer they want.

Wait, I thought this forum was a psych hospital?
I was only joking when I say, Welcome to the asylum, guess it's too true.

There's more than one way to skin a cat. Lots of people have used a jackshaft as a pivot point when the engine is mounted on the main frame, as apposed to a swing arm. Though the OP never stated if they wanted a swing arm rear end or independent suspension. Swing arm would be cheaper and give a bit more stability, plus easier to build. Though the lowest point would be the brake and sprocket.
