And aint that last part sad. The fools with all the money, Would rather pay someone to do it rather than learn!

I guess that is why we have Jobs.

chancer hits something on the head that I dwell on from time to time, sometimes it makes me proud, other times frustrated

but let's face it, if everyone was as handy as we are, no one would hire us

on a loosely related note, when did the phrase "DIY" expire and the word "Maker" take over?

You see I only make sense occasionally! LOL
:backtotopic:
Sometimes I'm doing work on a guys house that he CAN'T do, and the house is one we could NEVER afford.

I only get frustrated when they treat me like "The Help"

This is why We need Billionaires. A poor guy has never given me a job!

This is right on the money. I work on all kinds of cars that I can't afford. I appreciate them for what they are, but I don't value my job too much to put someone in their place if they try to treat me as "the help". The owner don't seem to mind, and I run the shop I work in so he's the only one I have to answer to. I guess I just used a whole lot of words to say this, well said sir, well said.

I have often heard the customer is always right.

Yes. Right between ignorant and stupid. :D

ETA: Which often times leads to the question of: Do you want it right, or do you want it right now?

I used to ask my boss that.
"you want it right or right now?"
He always responded with "BOTH!"
Needless to say I no longer work there! LOL

Faster, better, cheaper.
Pick 2.

Back when cars first came out you had to know how to work on it if you wanted to go across town. Now they will make 100k+ with minimal maintenance. **** new car owners don't even have to deal with keys anymore. Put this fob in your pocket and push a button. Parking assist, lane assist, and I could go on but the point is people are getting lazy. They don't teach technical skills in school anymore. It's a sad state.

I'm glad I came from a mechanical family. I like tinkering and have learned way more by my own means than I ever did in school.

I don't know if I had a point but it seems to fit.
Rant off.

I tried the drop out method but something said I need to be better than that. I spent the extra year and officially graduated. I'm better than a "good enough diploma".
But the funny thing is no one has ever asked to see it. It kinda drives the point.
College sounded interesting but I couldn't pay for it and I honestly had no idea what to pursue.
The internet came out just at the right time for me as it became my college. The wealth of knowledge. Omg. The world at my fingers.

Some one asked me how I know the answer to everything.
I replied, I dont, I just know How to get the answer.

Better than that? I'm going to do my best not to take that as an insult. Fwiw, I have chiseled out a good living doing what I dropped out of school to do, I don't even have a GED, but I'm ASE certified (along with a lot of other less meaningful certifications. In fact, I've gone so far with it all that I'm my own boss. The guy I work for owns the shop, but it's mine to run as I please and he don't question me about it. This all makes me want to tell you the abbreviated version of my life story, but I won't. Education doesn't equal intelligence. I've met many many people who have been educated beyond their intelligence.

All that said, I still can't spell worth a flip.

My comment was in no way meant to be an insult. If it came off that way I'm sorry.

Point is more of its what you know and not so much what a paper says you know.

I agree. With both of you.
If College was not the answer for some of us. There really was not much learned in the last 2 years of high School.
Job Applications ask, do you have a HS diploma. I do. so I check yes. But it never mattered.

Life and God given intelligence Is the best Education there ever was.
Wisdom comes through experience and you CANT get that in a Classroom or a book.

Shouldn't this be "Deep Thoughts by Randy H?"

Nevermind...can't get deep out of a shallow well...maybe the women at least find him "Handy".

Yeah...the ONE thing school never addresses is career choices. How is a kid supposed to know what avenue to pursue without any knowledge of the requirements or financial benefits of any professions?

Worst thing schools ever did...
Cut wood shop, metal shop, Auto shop, Drafting.
You know teach kids things that will help teach them a useful trade or skill.
Then teach them to balance a check book and pay a bill.
