Hi y’all! First post here, was recommended to me by the guy I bought an engine from and so far I’m loving it! Anyways, here’s the deal:

I’m currently working on building what I have dubbed a “super yard kart“. Basically everything you would find on a nice track kart minus, well… A nice track kart. The whole 9 yards. Built engine, slicks, disc brakes (for me personally they’re not hydraulic but still) and some other goodies, all thrown on to a cheap (relatively), homemade (probably) frame bought off of Facebook marketplace. Slightly Dangerous? Possibly. Slightly Irresponsible? Probably. A recipe for one hell of a good time on weekends? Definitely. Anyways, just wanted to see if anyone else has something similar out there to get some inspiration and check out what other people have done.

I can provide more details/pics on my personal build if anyone’s interested

Having come un-assed from an ATV many many many times the danger part...not so fun as it looks, but the rest ,absolutely!
I have been slung, pinned, rolled and thrown on my noggin so hard I couldnt walk for a week(concussed and twisted the vertebrae right above my tail bone-"ragdolled" the kids call it)..also drug down a dirt road like cheese grater, thats how I learned to let go when you wreck!
I try very hard to be more consistently safe, cause now my kids are older and it scares the hell out of me thinking about them doing 1/10 of the dumb assery I did.

I hear you on that one. I don’t plan on doing any crazy Hooning, I just want some thing Where I can press on the gas, get up to a nice speed and then press a little bit more if it feels safe to do so. I’m always glad to hear this kind of perspective because it always serves as a good warning. One of the many advantages of the Internet! It’s a lot easier to learn from other peoples mistakes.
If it helps ease anyone’s mind I plan on running a 42 inch axle and 9in slicks with quite a bit of negative offset and a similar set up in the front. Intentionally making my wheelbase as wide as possible specifically to avoid the risk of flipping/tipping at high speeds. Plus, once again I don’t plan to do any crazy high speed cornering. At least until I’m a much better driver, and probably even still

Remember this..............Having a rollcage means full safety harness, not just a seatbelt, and of course a good helmet..............No rollcage means still having a good helmet of course, but no kind of harness or seatbelt at all. You need to be thrown clear in a rollover if you don't want your neck snapped like a dry twig.

Definitely. I don’t have a roll cage and I plan on wearing a motorcycle helmet. I actually remember a while ago I was looking at a listing for a kart on craigslist I believe and the seller had installed a full harness and racing bucket seat on a frame similar to mine. No roll cage or even roll bar. I was considering sending them a message simply telling them about the dangers of this combination. Probably should’ve in hindsight. Thanks for the wise words
