We have had this discussion before. The software for that is not compatible or something with the forum software. I cannot remember exactly what the reason was, but it was valid

Were you using java or php? Just an idea if i could get the attention of the forum owner, If I created a chat room could I get a link posted to main DIYGK site? or you could create a room there are many free chatroom sites, just have to add the link so all forum users could goto it.

We've talked about it before. The problem with most chat rooms is they are java. And resource intensive. This new server might be able to handle it. And then for a while we had an IRC channel or something like that opened. I dunno, never took off.

How about using another site for a chatroom and just posting a link to it? There are plenty of free chatroom sites. Admin would have to arrange the the link posting. No money no bother with having to pay for bandwidth.

I think it's a cool idea. I get bored reading and reading and reading the same thread, then waiting for reply. Live chat would be cool indeed....

Yup I've read almost the entire forum LOVE the goliath idea, might be my next project. Mind you it would have to have a pop can gun. Compressed air anyone? Back to subject, there are many free chat room sites all we need is a link to be posted to this site to access it.

Yes true for IRC (java or flash based for websites) but accessible via off-browser software like mIRC.

But there's a nice vBulletin chat available (comet chat)
it offers not only person to person chat (like facebook chat)
but also configurable chat rooms.

configuration is easy and it runs on php and javascript.
I used that and it works well (up to a point ;)... it gets confused if you use multiple servers for a site),
although I restricted access to specific usergroups,
to reduce the server load a bit.
It querys the database every other second for new messages,
and that can be a bad idea with too many active users in the chat ;)

Benefit:
as opposed to IRC you can read past messages in a chat room.
No missed messages because you've been offline. ;)

Downside:
it's NOT FREE SOFTWARE, 50 for a basic chat and 130 for a unbranded license with some nice additional features isn't exactly cheap for .

PS website incl a demo:

What you say is true but we wouldn't host it so we waste zero bandwidth, we only post a link to it and let them host it.

UMMM theres no more msn messenger seems its skype now.

An offsite chat may be interesting. On site (and directly linked), I don't think so. I also work at another forum, and there's an on site chat module there. In my time there, I've learned a couple things.

One- the chat generally tends to attract the younger, riff-raffier (?) generally unrestrained crowd. Policing is a problem. When the chat is directly affiliated with a site like ours, there are certain standards to uphold. This generally requires a live chat moderator to be available at all times. You'd be amazed just how sideways stuff can get.

Now it IS true that we TEND to have an older, more mature crowd here as compared to there- but loose cannons and idiots come in all shapes and sizes.

The other thing I have wintessed, is the fact that a chat module really is counterintuitive to a forum. People who seek advice especially, enjoy being able to get "instant answers". There's nothing wrong with this on the surface, however it hurts a forum in the long term. All these questions asked and answered in real time, are NOT there in threads for future searchers. This, in my humble opinion, is the real value of a forum- archived knowledge.

If someone wants to schedule a chat on a 3rd party place, that's fine as far as I'm concerned. I'll check out the link 'sid posted, but I just haven't been happy with the requirements I've seen in the past regarding self-hosted chats. Plus, having the posts on the forum means they are indexable -- and archived for future people to learn from.

Yes agreed on the indexing part, It was more a just shoot the poop idea, then actually taking about shop, but it would also be shop related. Guess I'll have to stick to skype and forums for now till I can figure out a way to get free chat and set up a filter properly. Its one of those prove it will work. Chat logs can be extremely massive after awhile. So thats the biggest problem.

:iagree:
but under certain circumstances...
(maybe just as a Mod-Tool) it can be nice to have.

but it's up to you if you want something like that.
Again, it queries A LOT to refresh the chatwindows.
And thus isn't exactly server friendly ;)

It's just the best on board solution I could find when I needed something like that ;)

Doc, you've hit most of the nails on the heads as far as I'm concerned. Since I've had to PM you for tech advise in the past (for this forum alone) you know that most of my computer experience is directly tied to what I needed to learn so I could set up, program and operate the CNC machines I've operated in my career.....

I've sampled other site's/ forums; my internet connection is specious at best, so forums that have "BLING" graphic's that lock things up are a definite turn off at best. Any type of "Instant Anything" just makes things so much worse.....

One of the things I love about the way Robert has things structured here is that the forum loads cleanly, and it's not like I'm trying to read a graphic novel like "Shogun" with each individual line being only 2.5 inches wide/long......

Cable TV has never been run down my road because of to few (potential) customers; all of the cell phone companies adds of who has the most/ best what ever stop about 5 miles away from home, and why should I spend ~$100.00 a month for a satellite hook up when I've never watched more than 2 to 5 hours of TV a week for the last ~25 years?

Instant Chat? Why?
